Hackers target verified social media accounts because they offer both a ready-made audience and borrowed credibility. A hijacked profile can put a scam in front of many followers who already recognize the account—and may be more likely to trust its posts. The verification badge does not prove that the account owner still controls the profile or approved every message.
Why a verified account is valuable to a scammer
Reach: an audience is already there
An established creator or organization can reach followers immediately. Instead of building an audience from scratch, a criminal who takes over the account can use its existing distribution to promote a fake giveaway, investment offer, phishing page, or malicious download. The FBI says account takeovers can broaden scam campaigns through the compromised profile.
Trust: the message looks more credible
Followers may treat a post from a familiar, verified profile as more legitimate than an unsolicited message from a stranger. The FBI Atlanta Division put it plainly in its October 16, 2024 warning: “The campaigns become more effective because the followers trust the verified accounts.” A badge can make a fraudulent pitch look official, but it is not proof that the account is currently secure or that a particular post is genuine.

Getting access to the real profile
A common route is targeted phishing or social engineering. The FBI warns creators to scrutinize suspicious login prompts and unexpected collaboration emails. The Identity Theft Resource Center’s 2022 report describes cases in which influencers were lured by verification-related phishing or Bitcoin-promotion claims; scammers obtained account details, changed recovery contact information, and locked victims out. These are examples of possible lures, not evidence that one method is more common than another.

Turning the account into a scam channel
After gaining control, a criminal may post a crypto “giveaway” linking to a malicious site designed to steal wallet information. Other posts may promote fake investments, trading platforms, guaranteed returns, or manipulated tokens. The CFTC says most digital asset frauds originate on social media and describes criminals creating or hacking profiles to promote fraudulent claims.
The goal may be to defraud followers rather than steal cryptocurrency directly from the account owner. A single trusted profile can help distribute a pitch to many people before the real owner regains control.

Takeover and impersonation are different threats
| Threat | What the scammer controls | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Account takeover | The real account, accessed without the owner’s permission. | An established profile may suddenly post unusual offers or urgent links. The FBI warns followers not to assume a verified creator is always in control of posts. |
| Impersonation | A lookalike account pretending to be the person or organization. | Check the exact handle and profile history; a similar name or image is not the real account. A USENIX study documents badge abuse in brand impersonation across social platforms, but does not measure crypto scams from hijacked verified accounts specifically. |
Both methods exploit recognition and trust, but only a takeover uses the genuine account. A verification badge alone cannot tell you which situation you are seeing.
What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
- The Federal Trade Commission said more than 95,000 people reported about $770 million in losses to fraud initiated on social media in 2021. Those reports cover social-media fraud broadly, not just cryptocurrency scams or verified-account takeovers.
- The FTC said bogus investment schemes accounted for 53 percent of money reported lost to social-media scams in the first half of 2023. More than half of reports about those investment scams showed cryptocurrency payment. This is not a measure of losses caused by badge-enabled scams or hacked verified accounts.
These are consumer-reported figures, so they reflect reported losses and FTC categories rather than every incident. The cited sources do not establish a verified-account-specific loss total, a current platform-by-platform ranking, or worldwide prevalence.

How to check a suspicious crypto post
- Pause at urgency or implausible returns. Be wary of a post that demands immediate action, promises unusually generous returns, or offers a giveaway that sounds too good to be true. The FBI and CFTC both identify urgency and hope of easy gains as scam tactics.
- Do not follow the post’s link to a wallet, exchange, or platform. Navigate independently to the service’s known official website instead.
- Confirm the claim somewhere else. Check through a separate trusted channel, such as the organization’s official website or another established account. Do not rely on the suspicious post itself as confirmation.
- Be cautious with investment sites and withdrawal requests. The CFTC warns that purported profits and fees demanded to withdraw funds can be part of investment-platform fraud. Check the entity independently before sending money or crypto.
How creators can reduce the risk of takeover
- Use a strong, unique password for each social account so a password exposed elsewhere cannot be reused to access it.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on the account. The FBI recommends MFA generally; its warning does not endorse a particular product or method.
- Review sessions and devices. Monitor login activity, active sessions, and connected devices so unfamiliar access can be spotted.
- Treat unexpected login and collaboration requests as possible phishing. Verify a request independently before entering credentials or opening a link.
- Report an account takeover or internet scam. The FBI’s warning directs victims to report incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
Sources and scope
The FBI warning is US law-enforcement guidance dated October 16, 2024; it offers practical advice but does not establish worldwide prevalence. The CFTC explains digital-asset and impersonation fraud patterns without quantifying verified-account takeovers. The USENIX study concerns brand impersonation broadly, and the ITRC account examples are case reports rather than prevalence data.
