Repeated exposure can make familiar violent imagery feel less shocking. Psychologists describe this kind of reduced response to a repeated stimulus as habituation or desensitization. Studies of repeated movie viewing and repeated video game play offer evidence for specific changes in emotional response, but they do not show that every player changes or that feeling less during a game means accepting real-world violence.
Why familiar game violence may feel less shocking
A first encounter with graphic imagery can feel startling partly because it is unfamiliar. With repetition, the same stimulus may draw a weaker response. That ordinary pattern is one possible reason gore that once felt intense can become easier to watch during later play.
A reduced reaction is not, by itself, proof of moral approval, a lack of empathy, or a change in how someone responds to real people. Those are different outcomes, and research measures them in different ways.
What studies of repeated exposure have found
Repeated viewing of violent movie scenes
In a 2009 study, Fanti showed participants nine violent movie scenes and nine comedy scenes. The study abstract reports that repeated exposure reduced the short-term psychological impact of media violence: participants tended to show less sympathy toward victims and greater enjoyment of the violent scenes. This is evidence about repeated exposure to movies, not a video-game experiment. Read the study abstract.

Repeated play and guilt during a game
A 2017 longitudinal experiment found that repeated play reduced a game’s ability to elicit guilt. The result concerns emotional responses during later game-play experiences; it is not a general measure of empathy or behavior outside the game. Read the study.
What the evidence does—and does not—say about empathy
A correlational study of children
Funk and colleagues studied 150 fourth- and fifth-grade students in 2004. Reported exposure to violent video games was associated with lower empathy, while exposure to violence in games and movies was associated with stronger pro-violence attitudes. The study did not establish that media exposure caused those differences. Its authors also noted that the sample’s relatively low exposure to real-life violence could limit interpretation. These findings apply to the measured group and associations, not to all players. Read the study abstract.

Reviews make broader, qualified claims
A 2017 paper reviewing the American Psychological Association task force assessment summarized associations between violent video game exposure and outcomes including increased desensitization and decreased empathy. A 2021 review concluded that exposure increases desensitization risk, with a focus on children and adolescents. These are review-level conclusions; they should not be read as proof that every player experiences the same effect or that a particular player’s muted response predicts real-world conduct. Research on this subject does not measure one universal response called “desensitization.” A study may measure sympathy for fictional victims, guilt while playing, empathy scores, attitudes toward violence, or physiological reactions. A change in one measure does not automatically demonstrate a change in the others.

- Movies versus games: repeated viewing of film scenes and repeated play are related forms of exposure, but they are not the same activity.
- Immediate response versus later response: a short-term change in sympathy or enjoyment differs from reduced guilt during later play.
- Association versus cause: a correlation between reported exposure and an empathy measure cannot establish that exposure produced the difference.
- Fiction versus real life: a response to game imagery does not, on its own, establish how someone feels about or behaves toward real people.
A 2006 experiment specifically examined physiological desensitization to real-life violence following game exposure. Its introduction noted that little experimental research had addressed that outcome; it therefore should not be treated as settling whether responses to game violence transfer to real-world reactions. Not feeling as shocked by familiar game gore is consistent with becoming accustomed to a repeated stimulus. That observation alone cannot diagnose desensitization, establish a broader change in empathy, or predict behavior. The studies summarized here differ in age group, medium, method, and outcome, so they do not support a single explanation or a ranked list of game features that cause the change.
