Google’s AI Overviews really did produce widely reported answers about eating rocks and putting glue on pizza in May 2024. The two examples had different routes to the summary: the pizza suggestion was traced to a satirical Reddit comment, while the rock answer was linked to satirical material. Google acknowledged that some Overviews were inaccurate or unhelpful and announced changes, but those changes were not proof that errors had been eliminated.
What Google’s AI Overviews said
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries displayed above ordinary Google Search results. In May 2024, screenshots and reports drew attention to an Overview suggesting glue as a way to help cheese stick to pizza, as well as a response to a question about how many rocks a person should eat. Google Search chief Liz Reid later acknowledged that “some odd, inaccurate or unhelpful AI Overviews certainly did show up,” as quoted by the Associated Press.
The examples mattered because a summary can make a source’s words look like serious advice after losing the context that made them satire. That is different from evidence that the advice is sound: neither rocks nor glue belong in food guidance.

The pizza-glue suggestion
The Associated Press reported that the glue suggestion came from a satirical Reddit comment. In other words, the source was a joke, but the Overview presented the idea in a way that could be read as practical advice. A real source does not guarantee a reliable summary of its meaning.

The rock-eating answer
Contemporaneous reporting tied the rock answer to satirical material, including an Onion article republished on a geology-related website. The precise retrieval and generation steps are not independently established in the available accounts, so it is more accurate to describe this as the reported source explanation than to claim certainty about Google’s internal process.
Google Search chief Liz Reid described broader reasons an Overview could go wrong: “misinterpreting queries, misinterpreting a nuance of language on the web, or not having a lot of great information available,” according to the AP’s account of her blog post. These examples illustrate how context and query interpretation can matter, not a complete technical diagnosis of either answer.

Were the viral Google AI screenshots real?
Some widely discussed examples were real and covered by Google and news organizations, but not every screenshot circulating online was authentic. The AP reported that fabricated examples also spread. Live Science said it could not independently verify social-media posts it discussed, so an uncorroborated screenshot should not be treated as proof that Google generated a particular answer.
It is useful to separate four questions when assessing a viral example: whether the screenshot is authentic, what its source originally meant, what Google said about the failure, and whether any announced fix was shown to improve outcomes. Evidence for one does not settle the others.
What did Google change after the AI Overview mistakes?
In May 2024, Google said it had made more than a dozen technical improvements after examining examples. Reported measures included improving detection of nonsensical queries that should not receive an Overview, limiting satire and humor, reducing reliance on user-generated content in some cases, and adding restrictions for certain query classes such as health. These were announced safeguards, not an independent demonstration that AI Overviews had become error-free.
Google also said policy-violating Overviews appeared in fewer than one in seven million unique queries where an Overview appeared, as reported by The Guardian on May 31, 2024. That is Google’s attributed figure about policy violations; the cited reporting does not identify an independent audit or provide enough methodological detail to treat it as a verified rate. It is not a general error rate for false or misleading summaries.

What the incident does—and does not—show
The incident showed that an AI-generated summary could mishandle satire and present a misleading result prominently in Search. It also renewed concern about omissions in high-stakes answers. In the same period, Purdue University professor Mary Catherine Aime warned of missing context in a separate mushroom Overview, saying information left out “could have the potential to be sickening or even fatal,” according to the AP. That was a distinct example, not part of the pizza or rock incidents.

Computer scientist Chirag Shah, a University of Washington professor, told the AP: “If anything, this is worse because for decades people have trusted at least one thing from Google — their search.” The practical lesson is to treat an Overview as a starting point rather than a substitute for checking the linked sources, especially for health, safety, or other consequential decisions.
