If Google Search will not load, shows no results, feels slow, or returns results that seem wrong, first check whether your internet connection works. Then isolate the Google app or browser, and only after that investigate location and personalization—because different results are not always a malfunction.

Why is Google not working?

Start with the simplest test: open another webpage on the same device. If that page also fails, troubleshoot the connection before changing Google settings. If it loads normally, focus on the Google app or browser.

Check the connection first

  • Confirm Airplane mode is off and Wi-Fi or mobile data is enabled. Make sure the device is using the network you intend.
  • On public Wi-Fi, open a webpage and complete any sign-in or terms-of-use portal.
  • Check signal strength. Move closer to the router or try mobile data if the Wi-Fi signal is weak.
  • If the device says it is connected but webpages do not load, restart a router you own or contact your internet provider.

These steps follow Google’s Android guidance; menu names and available options vary by device and network. Retest Google after each change. If another webpage works but Search still fails, continue with the app or browser checks below. Google’s Android troubleshooting steps and iOS guidance provide platform-specific help.

Why is Google Search not showing results?

If the connection is working, determine whether the issue is limited to the Google app or happens in a browser too. This comparison helps narrow the cause without assuming there is a Search outage.

If you use the Google app

  1. Close and reopen the app, or force-stop it if your device offers that option.
  2. Restart the device and try the same query again.
  3. Once connected to the internet, install any available update for the Google app.
  4. If the problem continues, clear the app cache using your device’s app settings, then test again. Google describes cache as temporary data.
  5. Consider clearing app data only as a later step: this removes app data, including files and settings. Use the current Android instructions or iOS instructions; exact labels differ.

If you use a browser

Try the same query in a private or incognito window. If it works there, browser data or an extension may be involved. Google documents this diagnostic sequence for Google Images loading or display issues—not as a guaranteed fix for every Search problem:

  1. If private browsing helps, clear the browser’s cache and cookies, then retest in a normal window.
  2. If the problem remains, temporarily disable toolbars or extensions and test again.
  3. Check that JavaScript is enabled, then reload the page.

For Search, Google recommends a supported, up-to-date browser. Its guidance does not specify minimum version numbers, so use your browser’s current update mechanism rather than relying on an assumed version cutoff. See Google’s browser guidance and its Google Images troubleshooting steps.

Why is Google so slow?

Compare Search on the same device using a different network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If it is slow only on one network, investigate that connection; if it is slow only in one browser, test the browser in a private window and check its cache and extensions. If the Google app is slow but browser Search is responsive, restart and update the app before changing its data.

Retest the same query after each change. This comparison distinguishes a network-specific or app/browser-specific slowdown from one that follows the device across both networks and interfaces. The available Google guidance does not establish a current widespread outage or a typical Search speed, so a slow result alone is not enough to conclude that Google is down.

Why are my Google search results different?

Different results can be legitimate. Google says results may vary with time, data-center rollout, location, language, device, recent searches, and personalization. Personalization affects only some results; differences between two people do not by themselves show that one set is broken. See Google’s explanation of personalized results.

Check location and local intent

Look for the location shown on the results page. Google can estimate location from several sources, and browser location permissions may affect device location. For a local search, include a city or neighborhood in the query—for example, “pharmacies near Capitol Hill Seattle” instead of “pharmacies near me.” Compare a local query with a general one to see whether the difference is about place rather than Search failing. Google explains how it determines your location.

Compare personalized and non-personalized results

When a result is marked as personalized, look for the “Try without” option to compare that query without personalization, if it is available. This is a one-query comparison and does not change your settings. Google notes that turning off personalization does not remove every contextual influence: location, language, device, and the current query can still matter. Search settings are being updated, so the controls may not look identical for every user.

How do I make Google search better?

Make the query more specific in stages. Begin with the subject, then add words likely to appear on the page you want. Include a place name when location matters. For example, change “bike repair” to “bike repair shop open Sunday in Portland” if those are the details you need.

  • Use Advanced Search when you need to narrow or broaden a query with more controls.
  • Retest after adding one useful detail at a time so you can see which term changes the results.

Filter names, order, and availability can change. Google’s help describes Search filters and Advanced Search without guaranteeing one fixed layout.

How do I report a persistent Google Search problem?

If Search remains broken after you have compared another network or device and checked the relevant app or browser, send feedback from a result using More → Feedback. Describe what happened, the query involved, and what you expected to see. Google says it may review reports but cannot always reply, and feedback does not affect ranking. Treat this route as a report, not immediate technical support. Google’s feedback instructions explain the process.
