Google paused Gemini’s ability to generate images of people in February 2024 after users shared inaccurate and offensive results, including reported depictions of Nazi-era German soldiers as people of color. Google said it would improve the feature and test it extensively before restoring it. The pause applied to people-image generation in the Gemini app—not Gemini as a whole or all image generation.
What Google paused—and what it did not
On February 23, 2024, Google said it had recently turned off image generation of people in the Gemini app while it worked on accuracy. The company described this as a pause to that feature, not a shutdown of Gemini, its underlying AI models, or image generation everywhere. What happened with the Nazi-era images
Contemporaneous reports described users circulating images that portrayed Nazi-era German soldiers as people of color, along with other historically inaccurate depictions. Those examples explain the phrase “racially diverse Nazis” in the headline. Google’s own post acknowledged that some generated images were inaccurate or offensive, but it did not authenticate or catalogue each image circulating online. How Google explained the failure
Google Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan wrote that the feature “missed the mark” and apologized for its performance. He attributed the problems to two issues with the company’s tuning, rather than presenting a separately verified technical investigation.

Its effort to show a range of people was applied in the wrong contexts
Google said its tuning to make generated images show a range of people failed to account for cases where that approach was inappropriate. In a historical setting, applying diversity-oriented behavior without sufficient attention to context could produce depictions that misrepresented the period or subject.
The model also refused some harmless prompts
Google said the model had become more cautious than intended and wrongly treated some benign prompts as sensitive, refusing them. That means the problem was not limited to what the model generated; Google also acknowledged that it sometimes would not answer prompts it should have handled.

What Google said it would do next
Google said it had switched off image generation of people and would work to improve the feature significantly before bringing it back. Raghavan said the process would include extensive testing. The February 2024 announcement described a plan; it does not establish when the feature returned or how well later versions performed.

Why the distinction matters
- Scope: The action concerned generating images of people in the Gemini app, not all of Gemini or every Google image-generation system.
- Evidence: Google admitted that some results were inaccurate or offensive; specific Nazi-era images were described in contemporaneous reporting.
- Timeline: Google’s proposed improvements and testing were announced in February 2024. That announcement alone says nothing about current availability or whether later changes resolved the failures.
