If Google Calendar opens to an old month, first open calendar.google.com directly instead of using your usual bookmark or shortcut. A saved link can contain a specific date and reopen Calendar there. If the date is right but the layout is wrong, change the view selector; Calendar remembers the view you choose. Click Today to return to the current date.
Is the date wrong, or is the calendar view wrong?
These are separate problems. The date is the day, week, or month Calendar has navigated to. The view is how much of the calendar is displayed—such as Month or Week. A date-specific link can open an old date, while a saved view preference can make the calendar look different from what you expect.
Google’s desktop instructions list Day, Week, Month, Year, Schedule, and 4 days as view choices, and say that the selected view remains the default until you change it. That affects the layout, not necessarily the date shown. Google Calendar Help: View your day, week, or month
Check whether a saved link is opening an old date
Bookmarks, desktop shortcuts, and browser startup pages can store a Calendar address that points to a particular date. A Google Calendar Help Community user reported that a startup-page URL containing a date, such as /r/customday/2026/6/12, reopened Calendar at that date; removing the dated link resolved that user’s issue. - Open a new browser tab and type calendar.google.com directly.
- If Calendar opens to the date you expect, inspect the bookmark, shortcut, or browser startup page you normally use. Look in its address for a date-specific path.
- Replace the saved address with the base Calendar address, or create a fresh bookmark from that address.
If the base address also opens to the wrong date, continue with the steps below rather than assuming the bookmark is the cause.
Choose the layout you want
On desktop, open Calendar’s view selector and choose Day, Week, Month, Year, Schedule, or 4 days. Google says your choice becomes the default view until you change it. This sets the display layout; it should not be treated as a guaranteed way to reset a stale date. Google Calendar Help: View your day, week, or month

A Community Product Expert has also pointed to https://calendar.google.com/calendar/r/month as a way to open Month view. That route is a view choice, not a universal fix for an old date embedded elsewhere. Google Calendar Help Community: Show current month when opened
Return to today’s date
Click Today in Calendar’s date-navigation controls to return to the current date. Then reopen Calendar through the base address rather than a saved dated link. Google’s desktop help documents the Today control and date navigation. Google Calendar Help: View your day, week, or month

If the base address still opens to the wrong date
Try these checks to determine whether the behavior is tied to the browser. They are troubleshooting tests, not a confirmed diagnosis:
- Open Calendar in a private or incognito window. If it behaves correctly there, review the usual browser’s extensions and stored site data.
- Try a different browser. If Calendar behaves differently, the issue may be related to the original browser’s settings or data.
- Recheck how you launch Calendar, including startup pages and desktop shortcuts, to make sure they do not send you to a dated URL.

Google’s desktop help explains how to select a default view and navigate dates; it does not document a setting for choosing a fixed opening date. A Google Calendar Help Community answer says there is no setting to choose a specific start date. Treat that as Community guidance, not a universal statement about every platform or version.
