White or background-colored lines between adjacent SVG paths usually come from either a real geometry gap or anti-aliasing at a shared edge. Diagnose which one you have before editing the artwork: seams that flicker with zoom or change with the background are commonly rendering artifacts, while a separation that remains in outlines or raster exports points to geometry, clipping, or stroke settings.
First determine whether the gap is real
Use zoom as a quick rendering test
Change the browser zoom and inspect the seam. If it flickers, changes thickness, or disappears at some zoom levels, neighboring anti-aliased edges are probably exposing background-colored pixels. A stable line at every zoom is more suspicious for a coordinate mismatch, clipping boundary, or stroke problem.
Change the background
Preview the SVG over white, black, and a bright color. A seam that changes to the background color indicates uncovered anti-aliased pixels rather than a consistently colored object inside the drawing.
Inspect outlines and a raster export
Switch the editor to outline view or export a raster copy at a useful resolution. A persistent separation in the outlines or raster output is evidence of an actual gap, rounded coordinates, a split path, or a mask or clip that stops short.

Isolate compositing and transforms
Temporarily disable clipPath, masks, filters, and group transforms. Apply contrasting fills or temporary debug strokes to identify the layer that creates the seam. This is especially important when the visible edge is produced by clipping rather than by the path geometry itself.
Why adjacent SVG paths develop seams
Independent anti-aliasing at a shared boundary
SVG renderers sample each path edge independently. When two mathematically touching edges land between device pixels, each edge can be partially covered and the background can show through as a hairline. The paths can be perfectly aligned in SVG coordinates and still produce a visible seam on a particular display.

Fractional coordinates from scaling and transforms
CSS sizing, non-integer zoom, nested viewBox scaling, and transforms can move an apparently straight boundary onto subpixels. Responsive dimensions make this more likely because the same SVG coordinate is mapped to different device-pixel positions at different sizes and device-pixel ratios.
Small geometry mismatches
Exporters may round coordinates differently when splitting artwork into paths. A tiny mismatch, an omitted endpoint, or separately calculated polygon edges can leave a genuine crack that is too small to notice in an editor but visible in the browser.

Strokes, caps, joins, and miter limits
A stroke is centered on its path, not placed wholly inside it. Different stroke widths, line caps, joins, or miter limits can therefore expose spaces at endpoints and corners even when the fills touch. Scaling a stroke can make the discrepancy appear only at certain sizes.
Clips, masks, and filters
A clip or mask is another compositing edge. If its boundary ends exactly at the visible artwork, anti-aliasing can reveal the background. Filter regions and nested transformed groups can create a similar apparent crack without changing the underlying fills.

Fixes that work, in order of robustness
Merge adjacent regions that share a color
For same-color neighbors, combine them into one compound path. One rendered boundary removes the pair of independently anti-aliased edges and is usually the most robust solution across browsers and device-pixel ratios. It also eliminates a fragile internal seam from the editable geometry.
Add a controlled overlap
Extend one region slightly beneath the other so no background pixel is exposed. A practical starting range is 0.25–1 SVG unit; this is technical guidance, not a controlled benchmark, so inspect the result at the actual display sizes you support. Keep the overlap on the hidden side and test corners carefully to avoid changing the visible silhouette.

Use a backing shape or matching stroke
When merging is impractical, place a same-color backing shape beneath the neighboring paths or add a very small matching stroke. This can hide raster seams while preserving separate editable objects. It is less suitable where adjacent regions have contrasting colors, because the cover can bleed into the wrong region.
Snap suitable edges and dimensions
For straight, pixel-oriented artwork, use integer-friendly coordinates and rendered dimensions where possible. Remove unnecessary fractional transforms and avoid chains of nested scaling that move edges onto subpixels. Do not force every responsive illustration onto integer coordinates if doing so distorts its intended proportions.
Make stroke settings consistent
For neighboring stroked paths, match stroke width, linecap, linejoin, and miter limit. If the design permits, convert critical strokes to filled outlines so the final coverage is explicit. Recheck corners after conversion because joins can alter the silhouette.
Extend clip and mask boundaries
Let a clip path or mask extend slightly beyond the artwork it is meant to contain. Treat that boundary as a compositing edge, not as a line that must terminate exactly at the visible contour. Keep the extension outside the intended visible area and verify that it does not reveal unrelated content.

A repeatable browser test
- Open the SVG at its intended CSS size and record whether the seam is visible.
- Check several browser zoom levels, including the default and at least one enlarged and reduced view.
- Repeat at different device-pixel ratios or on displays with different scaling settings.
- Place the image over light, dark, and saturated backgrounds.
- Test each embedding mode you use: inline SVG, an
<img>, CSS background, and any canvas or export pipeline. - After applying a fix, inspect both the normal view and a raster export for unintended overlaps, halos, clipped corners, or color bleed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume a white line is an empty hole simply because it is white; it may be the page background showing through anti-aliased pixels.
- Do not add a large overlap before checking the geometry. Excessive overlap can change silhouettes and create visible wedges at corners.
- Do not rely on one browser or one zoom level. A seam that disappears on your monitor may return at another device-pixel ratio.
- Do not solve a stroke seam by changing only the fill. Stroke placement, caps, joins, and miter limits control the visible boundary.
- Do not remove transforms, masks, or clips permanently without checking what other parts of the illustration depend on them; isolate them first, then simplify only the responsible chain.
Practical decision path
If the line changes with zoom or background, start with a same-color merge, a carefully tested overlap, or a backing shape. If it persists in outlines or raster output, correct the coordinates or path topology first. If only stroked objects are affected, standardize stroke settings. If disabling a clip, mask, or transform removes the line, simplify or extend that compositing boundary rather than altering unrelated paths.
