Ford still offers manual transmissions in the U.S. 2026 Mustang lineup because the car continues to serve buyers who want an enthusiast-focused driving experience—and early order data show that interest in a manual was meaningful. Ford has not publicly explained the internal business decision, so claims about costs, profitability, or a specific sales threshold would be speculation.
Which 2026 Mustangs still offer a manual?
Ford’s U.S. 2026 Mustang lineup offers a six-speed manual on GT configurations. The Dark Horse has an available TREMEC six-speed manual, while its 10-speed automatic is now standard. In other words, Ford continues to support a stick shift, but its availability depends on the trim and configuration. Check Ford’s 2026 Mustang lineup for current equipment details; availability can vary by market and model year.
Ford also identifies a distinctive Titanium Anodized Blue shift knob on the Dark Horse Premium. That detail reflects how the shift interface can be part of a trim’s character, but it does not mean every Mustang manual uses the same knob.
Why keep the manual? The evidence points to enthusiasts
A manual gives Mustang buyers who prefer to select their own gears an option that emphasizes driver involvement. That makes it a natural fit for the Mustang’s enthusiast audience. This is a reasonable interpretation of Ford’s product choices, not a stated explanation from Ford management for retaining the transmission.

There is evidence that this audience is more than hypothetical. In an August 11, 2023 report, The Associated Press said more than a quarter of roughly 13,000 U.S. orders for the 2024 Mustang included the six-speed manual. Ford spokesperson Mike Levine supplied the figure. It describes an early order snapshot—not final deliveries, all Mustang sales, or demand for the 2026 model.
The same AP report said 67% of those roughly 13,000 orders included a V8. That is a separate figure: V8 interest should not be mistaken for manual-transmission demand. AP also quoted Mustang brand manager Jim Owens saying, “We tend to see more demand from enthusiasts for the V-8 whenever an all-new Mustang is introduced.” His comment concerns V8 interest, not Ford’s decision about the manual.

What Ford has—and has not—said about the decision
Ford’s public materials establish that it continues to offer the manual on selected 2026 Mustang configurations. The sources cited here do not establish Ford’s per-car economics, engineering expenses, emissions costs, profitability, or the minimum sales volume required to keep the transmission. Nor do they contain a direct Ford statement explaining why the company retains it.
The most defensible answer, then, is limited but useful: Ford continues to include the manual as an option for buyers who want one, and the early 2024 order data showed notable interest among new-Mustang customers. Those facts support an enthusiast-appeal explanation; they do not prove that enthusiasm is Ford’s only reason.

What to weigh when choosing manual or automatic
- Driving preference: Choose based on whether operating a clutch and selecting gears yourself is part of the experience you want. That preference is personal rather than a measured advantage.
- Traffic and convenience: A manual requires clutch operation, which may be less convenient in repeated stop-and-go driving.
- Trim availability: Verify the transmission offered on the exact trim and configuration. For the U.S. 2026 lineup, GT configurations offer a six-speed manual; the Dark Horse TREMEC six-speed is optional, with the 10-speed automatic standard.
- Remote start: Ford’s 2026 update says remote-start features are unavailable on vehicles with a manual transmission.
The sources cited here do not establish instrumented acceleration, lap-time, fuel-economy, reliability, or ownership-cost differences between the manual and automatic. Do not assume one is faster, cheaper, or more efficient without evidence for the specific model and conditions.
