Foldable phones make a small device much larger; foldable laptops make an already large screen somewhat larger. That difference helps explain why Apple’s announced iPhone Duo has drawn attention while foldable laptops remain a niche category. The laptop designs also bring practical trade-offs—premium launch prices and, in some cases, extra keyboard or stand setup—that can make the expanded screen feel less worthwhile.

What changed with the iPhone Duo?

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, describing it as its first foldable iPhone. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, according to Apple’s announcement. The phone can still handle ordinary tasks while closed, then open into a larger, tablet-like screen. That makes the fold serve two familiar use cases: a pocketable phone and a larger display when needed.

Apple says the phone is powered by A20 Pro and that iOS 27 adapts to its folding positions. Split View supports two apps side by side, and users can save app pairs. These are Apple’s announced features, not independent hands-on findings. Apple CEO John Ternus called the device “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original”; that is the company’s characterization, not an independent assessment.

Apple’s announced schedule begins with preorders on October 16, 2026, followed by general availability on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, and October 30 in 28 additional countries and regions. The dates describe Apple’s announcement and do not establish availability in every location.

Why does folding make a bigger difference on a phone?

A conventional phone screen is small enough that unfolding can change the character of the device: a larger display is useful for reading, watching video, or viewing two apps at once. And because the outer screen remains usable, the phone need not be opened for every task.

Laptops start from a different place. A conventional clamshell already offers a substantial screen and a built-in keyboard. The larger unfolded panel can be valuable, but for many users it is an expansion of an existing laptop experience rather than a shift from phone-sized to tablet-sized.

Ross Rubin, founder and principal analyst at Reticle Research, made that distinction in TechRadar’s September 26, 2026 article: “the jump from an approximately 13” Windows experience in clamshell mode to a 16” or 17” Windows experience in unfolded mode is less dramatic.” The screen gain may matter to people who need more workspace, but it is not automatically compelling enough to change how most laptop buyers work.

What gets in the way of foldable laptops?

More screen can mean more setup

Some foldable PCs are designed to work with a separate keyboard. TechRadar reports that Lenovo’s first ThinkPad X1 Fold could store its Bluetooth keyboard between the two display halves. The later Gen 2 kept the keyboard separate in a protective case that also served as a stand. That flexibility can support different configurations, but it also means the user may need to reposition equipment before using the full screen comfortably.

Phones generally ask for only one extra action: unfold them. A laptop that requires a keyboard to be moved or a stand to be arranged has to justify that extra handling with a clear benefit.

Early products carried premium launch prices

The historical launch prices cited by TechRadar show the scale of the commitment: ASUS launched the Zenbook 17 Fold OLED at $3,500 in 2022, and HP launched the Spectre Foldable PC at $5,000 in 2023. These are launch prices, not current offers. At those levels, buyers would need a strong reason to choose the folding design over a conventional laptop or a laptop-and-tablet combination.

The product pipeline has been quiet

TechRadar’s September 2026 account lists one foldable-screen laptop each from ASUS, Huawei, and HP, and two from Lenovo. It reports that Lenovo’s ThinkPad Fold 16 Gen 2 reached the market in November 2023, with little subsequent activity in the category. That is the article’s product inventory, not a definitive global census or evidence of sales performance. No market-size or sales figure in the cited material establishes how many people have bought these devices.

Are foldable laptops a bad idea?

No. They can suit people who specifically want a larger, taller, or portrait-oriented screen in a device that can still fold for transport. The trade-off is that the display’s expanded area may come with less conventional ergonomics, separate input equipment, or extra setup. A rollable display could avoid some keyboard shuffling by expanding the screen without the same folding arrangement, but that is a possible design direction—not proof that rollables have solved the category’s adoption challenge.

Software matters, too, but it cannot create demand by itself. TechRadar notes that Windows work has included adapting preview behavior for dual-screen use. Apple’s iOS 27 features show how the phone maker plans to accommodate its foldable screen. In either case, software support can make the hardware more useful; it does not remove questions about price, portability, or whether the larger display changes a buyer’s daily workflow enough.

What would make foldable laptops more compelling?

The product has to make the unfolded mode useful enough to justify its cost and handling. A foldable laptop is easier to recommend when its screen expansion enables a clear work benefit—such as viewing more content at once or switching between laptop and portrait-oriented use—without making keyboard placement and setup a regular nuisance.

  • A meaningful change in use: the expanded display should do more than add inches to a familiar clamshell experience.
  • Simple everyday handling: the keyboard, stand, and folded configuration should work without repeated rearrangement.
  • A price that matches the benefit: buyers need a reason to accept a premium over a conventional laptop or separate devices.
  • Software designed around the screen: windowing and app behavior should make the additional space productive rather than merely available.

The iPhone Duo illustrates why foldables may be an easier proposition in phones: the device remains a useful phone when closed and becomes something larger when opened. For laptops, the same transformation is less dramatic because the starting screen is already large. Until a folding PC delivers a similarly obvious everyday benefit with less friction, the category is likely to remain limited compared with foldable phones.
