Fighting game netcode took so long to improve because the more responsive solution, rollback, demands substantially more game-engine work than delay-based networking. Rollback predicts remote inputs, then restores and replays game state when a prediction is wrong; the game must be built to do that reliably. A library can help coordinate the process, but it cannot retrofit those capabilities into every game.

What “fixed” means in fighting game netcode

Online play cannot remove the time it takes data to travel between players. Netcode determines how a game handles that delay. Delay-based netcode can make local controls feel sluggish while machines wait for matching inputs. Rollback netcode tries to keep local controls responsive by predicting what the other player will do, then correcting the simulation if needed. It hides some effects of latency; it does not eliminate latency or guarantee a smooth match under every connection condition.

The practical question is therefore not why developers failed to apply an obvious switch. It is why games were built, tested, and shipped with different networking models—and why adopting rollback required engineering work, money, and a reason to prioritize online play.

How delay-based and rollback netcode differ

Approach How it works What players may notice Development trade-off
Delay-based The game waits for the inputs needed for a simulation step, often using an input buffer so both players advance in agreement. Controls can feel delayed. Longer travel time between players can increase the wait; connection problems may affect play even when remote input would not change the immediate outcome. Comparatively simple and inexpensive to add; much of the existing gameplay logic can remain unchanged.
Rollback The game advances using local input and a prediction of remote input. When the actual input arrives and differs, it restores an earlier state and simulates again with the correct input. Local control can feel immediate. A failed prediction may show up as a correction or brief visual discontinuity. Requires deterministic, fast game simulation, state saving and restoration, re-simulation, and careful handling of game-specific effects and sound.

Rollback’s advantage is responsiveness, not magic. It can conceal the wait for remote input while a prediction is likely to be right. When the prediction is wrong, the game must catch up to the actual input, and the correction can be visible. For an accessible technical explanation of both models and their trade-offs, see Ars Technica’s 2019 netcode explainer.

Why rollback was harder to build into a game

The simulation must be reversible

To correct a bad prediction, a game needs a usable record of its earlier state, a way to restore that state, and the ability to run game logic forward again. The simulation also has to be deterministic enough that replaying the same inputs produces the same result. This is not merely a networking-library task: the game itself must expose the right state and execute the needed frames reliably.

The official GGPO site describes integration with a deterministic peer-to-peer game engine and says the game must provide state save/load and frame execution. A rollback library can detect divergence and coordinate corrections, but the studio still has to make its own game fast and robust enough to support them.

Game-specific effects and audio need special care

Restoring a simulation can affect more than a character’s position. A predicted interaction might destroy an object that must reappear when the game rewinds; sound triggered by a prediction may need to be stopped or replaced after correction. These details vary by game, so an implementation that works in one title does not automatically work in another.

The engine and schedule matter

Delay-based networking offered studios a cheaper route to online play because it could preserve much of the existing gameplay logic without the extra state processing rollback requires. That made it attractive for projects whose systems and schedules were not designed around rewind-and-replay. Replacing or adapting those foundations takes engineering and testing time, not simply a preference for one networking term over another.

Why GGPO did not make rollback a drop-in fix

GGPO helped make rollback techniques available to developers, but a reusable SDK could not erase game-specific integration work. Its creator, Tony Cannon, described years of iterations and optimization for different internet connections, along with feedback from thousands of FinalBurn Alpha players. He also noted that Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix used its own rollback-enhanced netcode, illustrating that the concept could be implemented in different forms.

The dates often cited for GGPO refer to different milestones. Ars Technica reports that Cannon’s early emulator-based work was first released in late 2006; GGPO’s official site says its SDK was created in 2009. Those dates describe release and SDK creation, respectively, rather than conflicting dates for one event.

  • Compatible with Switch and Windows.
  • Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping and create macros
  • Dynamic button layout - button mapping changes with mode functionally and visually

Testing was another constraint. In a 2011 interview, Cannon put the challenge plainly: “How do you test your game out there on the internet for a year before you release it? You can’t.” Teams could test varied connections and gather player feedback, but they could not reproduce every player’s network conditions in advance. The interview also discusses how accumulated development and testing helped refine GGPO for different connections (Game Developer’s interview with Cannon).

What made developers prioritize rollback

Players asked for a better online experience

In an interview about Guilty Gear -Strive-, developers said rollback had been discussed internally since Guilty Gear Xrd and that they knew North American players strongly wanted it. For Strive, the team included rollback from early planning and designed the game on the assumption it would be available. That account shows how player demand could affect design decisions before development was complete (Noisy Pixel’s interview with the developers).

Online events became more important for some teams

SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda said the COVID-19 pandemic made offline events increasingly difficult to hold, and that improving online functions for The King of Fighters XV was necessary to facilitate online events. He also discussed feedback from the game’s open beta. This is a concrete example of circumstances changing the priority of online quality for one title—not proof that the pandemic alone shifted the entire fighting-game industry (Unreal Engine’s interview with Oda).

Why there is no single date when fighting game netcode was “fixed”

Rollback existed years before it became an expectation among more players and developers, but the available accounts do not establish a single industry-wide adoption date or quantify how quickly studios switched. The history is better understood as a gradual change in incentives: tools and implementation experience accumulated, players made responsiveness a more visible demand, and some teams had stronger reasons to support online competition. Different games still faced different engine constraints, schedules, and testing needs.

That is why “fixed” is too broad if it implies every fighting game now uses rollback or that rollback guarantees perfect matches. The meaningful change was that rollback became a more deliberate design priority in some games, rather than an easy retrofit that could be applied uniformly across the genre.
