Betting scrutiny is a real integrity and commercial pressure in Counter-Strike, but the documented exits do not show it as a general cause of teams leaving. Complexity cited shrinking revenue and difficulty funding a tier-one roster; ALTERNATE aTTaX pointed to economic conditions and a strategic shift; reporting on Evil Geniuses described poor results and organizational problems. Those explanations matter more than timing alone: scrutiny and departures can happen at the same time without one causing the other.

Which Counter-Strike departures are being discussed?

“Leaving Counter-Strike” can describe different decisions: an organization can drop its professional roster, pause competition while retaining a development project, or a league can suspend operations. Those are not interchangeable, and neither a roster departure nor a league pause proves that betting rules caused it.

Organization or competition What changed Reason given or reported What the evidence does—and does not—show
Evil Geniuses, January 2024 The organization exited the Counter-Strike roster scene. HLTV’s reporting described poor competitive results from 2021 onward, roster changes, organizational challenges, and broader contraction across the organization. This is reporter analysis, not a direct official explanation attributing the exit to betting scrutiny.
ALTERNATE aTTaX, October 2024 It said it would not field a professional CS2 team in 2025 for the time being, while focusing on its developmental Evo project. The organization cited a tense economic situation, the state of the CS2 ecosystem, and strategic realignment. This was a pause in its professional roster, not an announced permanent departure from Counter-Strike.
Complexity, August 2025 The organization announced that it was exiting its Counter-Strike roster. CEO Jason Lake said the esports economy had made it difficult to generate enough revenue to support a tier-one team, despite efforts to find investment and revenue. This is the clearest direct explanation among these cases; it identifies economics, not betting scrutiny, as the reason.
ESL Impact, after its eighth season in November 2025 The league announced it would suspend operations. ESL Impact said that, despite significant investment and progress raising the profile of women’s Counter-Strike, its economic model was not sustainable. This concerns a league and women’s competition, not an organization dropping its team.

The dates show when the decisions occurred, not why. In particular, the available explanations for these cases do not establish a causal link between betting-related restrictions or integrity investigations and a team’s departure.

What betting scrutiny means for Counter-Strike

Valve warns against betting and misuse of inside information

Valve’s official post, “Unnecessary Risks,” is CS:GO-era guidance, not a newly issued 2026 rule. It warns professional players, teams, and event production staff against betting on matches, associating with high-volume CS:GO gamblers, or sharing information that could affect bets. Valve wrote: “Betting using inside information, or even the perception or suspicion thereof, carries a significant risk of damaging your personal brand, your team, your community, and may lead to exclusion from future Valve-sponsored events.” The warning matters to teams because it describes reputational and tournament-access risks, including the risk of suspicion; it does not say that teams have left because of those risks.

Tournament rules can constrain sponsors and branding

ESL’s 2026 Counter-Strike rulebook restricts sponsors or partners it considers harmful to ESL’s reputation, disallows some entities that interact with Valve game inventories, and requires alternative branding where law, regulation, or platform rules prohibit a team’s gambling-related branding at an event. It also specifies consequences for participant withdrawals. These are tournament-level requirements: they can affect which branding a team may display at an ESL event, but the rulebook alone does not show that the requirements prompted a particular organization to leave.

ESIC investigated a specific betting-integrity case

ESIC said allegations involving ATOX arose in late 2024 around an ESL Pro League Season 20 match against Team Falcons. It circulated a Suspicious Betting Alert Network notice, received additional betting-related statistical data on 9 January 2025, investigated, and issued sanctions on 15 April 2025. This is an integrity investigation and its timeline—not evidence that an entire organization left Counter-Strike because of scrutiny.

How to interpret betting-alert numbers

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 70 suspicious betting alerts across 10 sports in Q1 2026. Fifteen were esports alerts, 22% of the total. IBIA classifies those esports alerts as global because events can be transnational.

  • An alert is not proof of match manipulation or a confirmed rule violation.
  • The 15 alerts cover esports, not Counter-Strike alone.
  • The figure measures alerts reported in that quarter, not team exits or the number of teams affected.

That distinction is essential: treating an alert count as a tally of proven fixes—or as an explanation for organizations’ business decisions—would go beyond what IBIA’s figures establish.

Betting scrutiny and sponsorship can coexist

Betting-related commercial partnerships remained visible in the scene: HEROIC announced Razed as a CS2 sponsor in August 2025, with jersey branding and digital activations. One sponsorship announcement does not establish that the economics of Counter-Strike are healthy, nor that every betting partner or branding arrangement is acceptable in every jurisdiction or at every event. It does show why “scrutiny has removed betting sponsorship from the scene” would be too broad.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The strongest documented explanation for a recent roster exit is financial: Complexity’s CEO said the organization could not generate enough revenue to properly support a tier-one team, while aTTaX also named economic pressure and strategy among its reasons for pausing its professional roster. The Evil Geniuses reporting points to competitive and organizational difficulties. Separately, Valve guidance, ESL rules, and ESIC enforcement show that betting integrity is a genuine concern with reputational and event-level consequences.

Those facts describe pressures in the same ecosystem, but they do not establish that betting scrutiny caused the cited departures. A claim of that kind would require direct evidence tying a specific organization’s decision to a particular rule, sponsor restriction, or integrity case.
