If your in-ear earbuds suddenly sound thin or lose bass when you move them, the fit may have opened a small gap around the tip. A stable, comfortable seal helps preserve low-frequency sound and block outside noise. Tip size, angle, and how the sound outlet sits in your ear can all affect the result; pushing an earbud deeper is not the goal.
Why do my earbuds have no bass?
A leak between an insert earbud’s tip and your ear canal can reduce bass substantially. In measurements of insert earphones, an Audio Engineering Society paper reported that a leak 0.5 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm long reduced bass at 50 Hz by approximately 15 dB. That result describes the paper’s equipment and test conditions, not a guaranteed change for every consumer earbud. Read the AES paper.
Shure gives similar product-specific guidance for its SE215: weak low-frequency response can indicate that the sleeve is not sealing tightly. Its guide suggests gently reseating the earphone or trying another sleeve. See the Shure SE215 guide.
How do seal, tip size, and position affect sound?
Seal and tip size
A tip that fits securely can close gaps that otherwise let bass escape. A tip that is too small may loosen or fail to seal; one that feels uncomfortable is not a good fit either. JBL recommends trying tip sizes and rotating the earpiece to establish a seal, while Sennheiser advises choosing adapters that fit snugly while remaining comfortable. These are manufacturers’ fitting instructions, not independent comparisons of sound quality. JBL’s in-ear fit guide · Sennheiser’s fitting instructions.

Angle and seating
Rotating or gently repositioning an earbud can change whether the tip seals. If bass returns at a particular angle or position, that is a useful clue that the seal was involved, though it does not identify every possible reason for uneven sound.
Insertion depth
How far the sound outlet sits inside the canal can also affect measured frequency response, but the evidence here comes from specialized clinical insert earphones. Interacoustics’ ER-2 datasheet calls for consistent insertion in audiometric use and shows response variation with depth, particularly above 8 kHz. Its graph and insertion guidance are specific to that calibrated device and its specified foam tip—not a prescription for consumer earbuds. See the ER-2 datasheet.

How tight should earbuds fit?
They should feel secure and comfortable, with the tip sealing without force. Do not push the tip beyond the opening of the ear canal. Shure explicitly warns SE215 users not to push the sleeve beyond that opening; follow the instructions for your own model and stop if insertion is uncomfortable. Shure SE215 safety and fit guidance.
How to check whether fit is changing the sound
- Check that both earbuds are seated in a similar way and that each tip is fully attached.
- Play familiar audio at a moderate volume. Gently adjust the angle and position of each earbud; do not force it deeper.
- If one side seems to leak or loosen, try the next supplied tip size and compare comfort and stability.
- Keep the fit comfortable. Your left and right ears may need different tip sizes.
Listen for whether bass and balance change as you adjust the fit. This is a subjective check, not a measurement or a diagnosis. If adjustments make no difference, fit may not explain the sound problem.

Do different ear tips change sound?
Different tip sizes can change how reliably the earbud seals, so they may change perceived bass when the original fit leaked. Replacement tips are not automatically interchangeable: check compatibility with your exact earbud nozzle. Consider size options, material, comfort, retention, and whether the charging case still closes with the replacement tips installed. No particular replacement tip is established here as the best choice.

A 2000 study by Dean and Martin tested 20 individuals for occlusion effects with shallow and deep foam-tip insert-earphone placement. Its abstract concludes that deep insertion is practical for clinical bone-conduction measurements; it does not establish an ideal consumer-earbud depth or quantify ordinary music-listening changes.
