Setting an input with input.value = "example" changes the field, but it does not automatically fire an input or change event. Call your application’s update function directly, or deliberately dispatch the event your existing listeners expect.
Why setting value does not fire an event
Changing a form control’s value in script is not treated as a user edit. The HTML Standard states that input and change events are not fired in response to script changes to form-control values. MDN makes the same distinction for the input event: assigning to .value does not fire it.
So this updates the field, but does not notify event listeners:

When you control the application code
Usually the clearest approach is to call the same function that updates your application state, rather than making your own code depend on a synthetic DOM event.

Assign the value first, then dispatch the event those listeners are designed to handle:
input.value = "Ada Lovelace";
input.dispatchEvent(new Event("input", { bubbles: true }));Use change instead if the listener expects a committed-value notification:

input.value = "Ada Lovelace";
input.dispatchEvent(new Event("change", { bubbles: true }));A dispatched event notifies listeners; it does not turn the assignment into genuine user input. Avoid dispatching both event types unless consumers actually need both, since that can make the same application work run twice. The platform rule is described in the HTML Standard.

inputis generally for responding to user edits as they happen.changeis generally for responding when a value is committed. For a text input, that commonly means after the user leaves the field, not on every keystroke.
These events describe user interaction and commitment differently; neither fires automatically just because script assigns a value. See MDN’s documentation for input and change.

Troubleshoot a handler that still does not run
- Check that the listener is attached to the same input element whose value your code sets.
- Check the event name and registration: use
addEventListener("change", handler)orinput.onchange = handlerfor a change handler. - Make sure the listener is registered before the code that assigns the value.
- If you expect a response to each user edit in a text field, use
inputrather than expectingchangeto run on each character. - If your code performs the update, call the shared state-update function or dispatch the expected event after assigning the value.
- If a framework or third-party component manages the field, use its documented state or update interface. Mutating the DOM value alone may not update state managed separately by that component.
