Windows 11 can install or reinstall network adapter drivers through Windows Update and recovery workflows, so a driver change after an update is possible. That alone does not prove Windows has a universal driver-reset bug. “Resetting” may mean a different driver version was installed, the same driver returned after removal, or network settings changed; checking the adapter and its driver details helps identify which happened.
What “resetting” could mean
First determine whether the driver actually changed or whether the problem is with connectivity or network configuration. Microsoft says Windows Update supplies drivers for network adapters, and Windows can reinstall an adapter driver after it is removed. Those behaviors can explain why a driver changes or returns, but they do not identify the cause on a particular PC. The adapter, PC manufacturer, installed driver packages, update history, and device-management settings all matter.
Check the adapter and driver details
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Open the relevant Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter’s Properties, then select the Driver tab.
- Note the driver provider, version, and date. Compare those details with any record you have from before the problem.
- Identify the symptom: a changed driver, a missing adapter, loss of Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or changed network settings. Also note whether it began after a Windows update or a driver update.
The driver details and timing can point to the appropriate recovery step, but without the PC model, Windows version, adapter, and update history there is no reliable way to name the cause.

If a recent driver update triggered the problem, try rollback
Microsoft Support says that if an issue occurred after a Windows Update, reinstalling the previous driver often resolves it. In Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties, select Driver, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Administrator permissions are required.

If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows may not have a previous driver to restore through this control. Do not assume the UI can force a rollback; get the correct driver from the PC manufacturer’s support site instead.
Save the correct manufacturer driver before uninstalling
Before removing a driver, download a backup from the computer manufacturer’s official support site. Match it to the exact PC model and your Windows version and architecture. Avoid third-party driver download sites.

If the affected PC is offline, download the driver on another computer and transfer it on a USB flash drive. This provides a way to get the saved driver onto the PC if Windows does not restore connectivity automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUninstall and reinstall the adapter driver
For an Ethernet connection, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance uses Device Manager to remove the adapter and then restart the PC. Windows will look for and install a network driver after restart.

- Industry leading support: 2-year and free 24/7 technical support
- This network transceiver supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the relevant adapter and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers an option to remove the driver software, do not select it unless you have the correct replacement saved and understand the consequences.
- Restart the PC and check whether Windows reinstalls the driver and connectivity returns.
- If it does not, install the manufacturer driver you saved. For Wi-Fi, make sure you have selected the wireless adapter and follow the manufacturer’s matching instructions.
Use Network reset only after simpler steps
Network reset is a broader step than rolling back one driver or reinstalling one adapter. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after restart. Microsoft places it late in its Ethernet troubleshooting sequence.
To use it, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, then select Reset now and restart when prompted. VPN software and Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured again, and known network profiles may change.

Why deleting driver packages or blocking updates is not a first fix
Deleting driver packages indiscriminately can leave a device without a usable driver if no other matching package exists. Windows Update may also reinstall a driver it detects as necessary. Removing packages or trying to block updates is not a guaranteed permanent solution; advanced driver or update-management changes require a diagnosis specific to the adapter and PC.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose the least disruptive path
| Situation | First path to try | Preparation or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The issue began after a driver update and rollback is available | Use Roll Back Driver in Device Manager | Requires administrator permissions; only available when Windows has a previous driver to restore. |
| The adapter or driver needs reinstalling | Save the correct OEM driver, uninstall the adapter, then restart | Windows attempts to reinstall a network driver; the saved driver is a fallback if it does not. |
| Simpler recovery steps did not resolve a connectivity problem | Consider Network reset | Removes adapters and settings; VPN clients and Hyper-V virtual switches may need attention. |
If the driver keeps changing after these steps, useful details for a device-specific diagnosis include the PC and adapter models, Windows build, driver provider/version/date before and after the change, update history, and whether work or school management tools control driver updates.
