Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSelenium captures what is on screen when the screenshot command runs; it does not wait for your web app’s JavaScript updates to finish. A page-load milestone such as document.readyState == "complete" is not proof that a single-page app has rendered the particular result you need. Wait for that result to become visible or otherwise reach its expected state, then take the screenshot.
Why the screenshot can be early
WebDriver navigation readiness and application readiness are different. By default, Selenium’s normal page-load strategy waits for the document’s readiness state to reach complete. But JavaScript can still fetch data, update the DOM, reveal content, or run animations after that point. This is common in single-page apps, where initial document loading and later data rendering are separate steps. Selenium’s wait guidance and browser-options documentation describe these distinctions.
The usual sequence is: your test triggers a navigation or interaction, WebDriver returns when the relevant command is done, the app continues asynchronous work, and the test captures the browser before the intended state appears. That is a synchronization race: sometimes the app gets there first, and sometimes the test does.
The screenshot command captures the current browser state; it is not an application-specific wait. Selenium’s JavaScript WebDriver API describes screenshot capture and its best-effort capture area, but does not promise to wait for the app to update. The capture area—such as the page, window, or visible frame—does not change this timing issue.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wait for the state the screenshot must show
Use an explicit wait for a real success signal from the page, then call the screenshot method. In Python, for example:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "updated-result")))
driver.save_screenshot("after-update.png")
Replace updated-result with a selector from your page and choose a condition that represents the result your test is meant to capture. The 10-second value is the maximum wait in this example, not a fixed pause: Selenium polls for the condition and proceeds as soon as it succeeds, or raises a timeout if it does not. See Selenium’s expected conditions.

Choose a condition that matches the update
- A result is newly shown: wait for the result element to become visible.
- Text changes: wait for the expected text, rather than merely waiting for the element to exist.
- A component is replaced: wait for the old element to become stale, then locate and wait for the replacement or its updated content.
- A page transition matters: wait for an appropriate title or other page-specific signal.
Expected conditions include element existence, visibility, visible text, staleness, and title contents. They are useful only when the condition corresponds to the final state you want to document; a condition that becomes true during an intermediate update can still produce an early screenshot.
Why sleeps and implicit waits often miss the problem
| Approach | What it waits for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed sleep | A set amount of time, regardless of page state | It may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. |
| Implicit wait | Element lookup availability, globally | It does not establish that an element’s later visual update is complete. Selenium’s default implicit wait is zero. |
| Explicit wait | A specified condition for a particular step | It depends on selecting a condition that truly signals the needed state. |
Selenium recommends condition-based synchronization and warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can lead to unpredictable total wait times. Set one deliberate strategy rather than adding a global implicit delay on top of explicit waits. The official waiting strategies page explains the behavior.

What page-load strategy does—and does not—wait for
Selenium’s page-load strategies control how navigation commands wait for document readiness: normal waits for complete, eager for interactive, and none does not block on document readiness. None of these guarantees that application-specific asynchronous work or visual transitions have finished. Also, Selenium notes that the page-load strategy applies to navigation by URL; it does not govern navigation caused by clicking an element or submitting a form in the same way. Use it to control document navigation behavior, not as a substitute for waiting on the update your screenshot needs.
Troubleshoot an outdated screenshot
- Check command order. Confirm the screenshot call comes after the click, submission, or navigation that should trigger the update.
- Identify the intended final state. Find a page-specific signal such as changed text, a visible result, or a replacement element.
- Wait for that signal explicitly. Avoid using a generic delay when a condition can describe the expected outcome.
- Handle replaced elements. If the app replaces a node, do not keep relying on an old element reference; wait for staleness and locate the new element.
- Reassess a wait that passes too soon. It may detect an intermediate state. Choose a condition closer to the final content or visual state required.
- Compare browser and driver behavior only after synchronization is sound. If the issue varies by browser or driver, Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some issues originate in underlying drivers.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot delivered by an API rather than a Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API is not a replacement for verifying your app’s test condition in Selenium; it is an alternative when your task is simply to capture a page. It removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and it offers an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots.
