A device can have multiple MAC addresses because a MAC address identifies a network interface—not necessarily an entire physical device. A laptop, phone, or router may expose several physical or virtual interfaces, and software may assign an interface a locally administered or randomized address. Multiple entries alone do not mean that multiple devices are present or that anything is wrong.
What a MAC address identifies
A MAC address is a link-layer address associated with a network interface. In everyday terms, it helps devices and network equipment identify an interface on a local network. It is not a universal serial number for a whole computer or phone.
One device can therefore have separate addresses for interfaces such as Ethernet and Wi-Fi, as well as for software-managed or virtual interfaces. A router may also have addresses associated with its network-facing interfaces. The 48-bit IEEE 802 address format includes bits that indicate whether an address is individual or group and whether it is universally or locally administered. RFC 9724 explains these fields and the privacy implications of persistent addresses.
Why two MAC addresses may appear for one device
Separate physical interfaces
A computer with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi can use a different MAC address for each interface. Depending on where an address list is collected, an interface that is disconnected or not currently in use may still appear.

Virtual and logical interfaces
Software can create logical interfaces that participate in networking without being separate physical hardware. Bridges and other virtual interfaces may have MAC addresses of their own or may share an address, depending on platform configuration.
For example, Cisco documents its Bridge-Group Virtual Interface (BVI) as a virtual interface connecting a bridge domain with routed traffic. In the Cisco 8000 guide, BVI interfaces share one MAC address by default, but a unique address can be configured. This is a Cisco-platform example, not a general rule for routers or virtual interfaces. Cisco 8000 Series Integrated Routing and Bridging guide

Locally administered addresses
A manufacturer assigns a universally administered address, but an operating system or network administrator can instead configure a locally administered address. The universal/local bit in the address distinguishes these categories. Because a local address may be chosen or changed in software, it should not be treated as reliable evidence of the device manufacturer. RFC 9724
Why a phone’s MAC address may change
MAC randomization is a privacy measure intended to make it harder to track a device through a persistent address observed on a shared network. RFC 9724 puts the rationale simply: “One way to address this privacy concern is by using randomly generated MAC addresses.”

Randomization does not necessarily mean the address changes on every connection. RFC 9724 describes generated-address modes that can be per-device, per-boot, or per-network. An address may therefore persist for a long time, change after a reboot, or be generated for a particular network attachment. The operating system, its settings, and the network context determine the behavior; there is no single rotation schedule that applies to every phone or computer. RFC 9724
For a specific device, consult current documentation for its operating-system version and check the network’s settings. Do not infer a particular rotation policy from the word “randomized” alone.

How to interpret multiple entries
Before deciding that an entry is an unfamiliar device, compare the addresses in context. These distinctions often explain why a device list and a hardware label do not match:
- Interface: Determine whether each entry corresponds to Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a virtual interface, a bridge, or a router gateway interface.
- Address administration: A locally administered address may not identify the hardware manufacturer in the way a manufacturer-assigned address can.
- Address lifetime: An address may be persistent, change after a reboot, or be associated with a particular network.
- Network scope: Check whether entries are on the same Layer 2 network or VLAN. The same address appearing in separate network contexts does not, by itself, establish a collision.
- Mapping assumptions: Consider whether the router, access controls, IP assignment, or inventory system assumes a stable relationship between a device and its MAC address.
A changing or unfamiliar MAC address alone does not establish spoofing or compromise. Assess it alongside the interface, network, connection history, and other relevant evidence.

What a MAC-address change can affect
Network infrastructure uses MAC addresses for link-layer forwarding and address-resolution processes. When a client presents a different address, a network may treat it as a new client. The practical effect depends on how it receives an IP address, when the change occurs, the network’s policies, and how quickly cached mappings are updated.
DHCP assignments and access policies
A network may assign an IP address to a client using DHCP, and a randomized address can be treated as a different client for that assignment. Policies or inventory systems that rely on a stable MAC-to-device mapping may likewise show a new entry or handle the client differently. Cisco discusses these possibilities in its guidance on randomized MAC addresses. Cisco DNA Center Q&A for Randomized MAC Addresses
ARP and Neighbor Discovery state
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) and Neighbor Discovery (ND) help systems associate network-layer addresses with link-layer addresses. If a MAC address changes while a client retains a static IP address, traffic can be interrupted until relevant neighbor mappings refresh. RFC 9797 describes this potential disruption when mappings change within cache lifetimes; the outcome depends on timing and network behavior. RFC 9797
Duplicate-address reports
Cisco notes that an end-user device may maintain a randomized address per SSID and that duplicate addresses are possible, although rare. That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee about every client or operating system. Cisco DNA Center Q&A for Randomized MAC Addresses
