If Windows shows ntoskrnl.exe on a blue screen, that name is a clue—not proof that the Windows kernel file caused the crash. A stop screen may show the stop code and, when available, the module active at the time; hardware, drivers, and software can all contribute. Record the exact stop code, any “What failed” text, when the problem began, and what changed recently before trying fixes. High CPU usage is a separate symptom: identify which activity is using the processor rather than assuming the module name reveals the cause.

What does ntoskrnl.exe on a blue screen mean?

ntoskrnl.exe is associated with the Windows kernel, but its appearance in a crash report does not establish that the file itself is damaged. A stop error reports a failure and may name a module involved when the system stopped; it does not necessarily identify the underlying cause. Microsoft lists hardware, device drivers, and software among possible contributors to blue-screen errors. Its analysis of stop-error crashes attributes 70% to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes because the memory was too corrupted to analyze. Those are Microsoft’s reported overall categories, not odds for your PC or for crashes displaying ntoskrnl.exe. Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance provides that context.

Write down the stop code and the precise “What failed” name if one appears. Also note whether the crash happens at startup, during a particular task, or after a recent hardware, driver, app, or Windows change. These details help distinguish a recurring pattern from a one-off crash.

What to check first, from least disruptive to more involved

1. Undo or isolate a recent change

If the problem began just after adding hardware, disconnect or remove it while the PC is powered down, if doing so is safe and practical. If you recently installed a driver or application, consider whether the timing matches the first crash. Avoid removing essential components or making changes you cannot safely reverse.

2. Start in Safe Mode if Windows will not load normally

Use Windows Safe Mode to continue troubleshooting when a normal startup repeatedly fails. Microsoft includes Safe Mode among its general blue-screen troubleshooting steps. Follow the recovery options available for your Windows installation; the exact route can differ depending on whether you can reach the sign-in screen or Windows Recovery Environment. Microsoft’s blue-screen guide covers the general recovery path.

3. Review devices, drivers, updates, and free space

Open Device Manager and look for warning marks beside devices. Check for a relevant driver update; if updating does not help, Microsoft advises disabling or uninstalling the device as a troubleshooting step. Install relevant Windows updates, and review whether the issue began after a particular update or driver change. Check the system drive’s available space as well: Microsoft says the exact requirement varies by system configuration and gives a general recommendation of 10%–15% free space. That is a general recommendation, not a universal minimum. For update installation problems, use the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Open Event Viewer and review the System log around the crash time for critical events that may help establish what happened just before the stop error. A related event is evidence to investigate, not by itself a diagnosis.

How to repair suspected Windows system-file corruption

If Windows components may be damaged, Microsoft recommends running DISM first and then System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. These commands repair Windows image or system-file problems; they are not a guaranteed fix for a faulty driver, hardware problem, or high CPU usage.

  1. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to finish. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update.
  3. Then run sfc /scannow. Let the verification complete; do not close the window or interrupt the scan before it finishes.
  4. Read the messages each command returns. If DISM cannot obtain repair files because the update client is not working, Microsoft documents specifying a different repair source, including removable media.

See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the supported sequence and repair-source details.

How to check whether memory may be involved

Windows Memory Diagnostic is a built-in way to test memory. A test can provide useful evidence, but a clean result does not prove that every possible hardware issue is ruled out.

  2. Choose the option to restart and check for problems. Save open work first; Windows will restart to run the test.
  3. After Windows starts again, look up the result in Event Viewer. Microsoft’s error-specific instructions describe where to find it; an extended test takes longer than a standard run.

Microsoft’s IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL troubleshooting page includes the Memory Diagnostic procedure and result location.

What to do about high CPU usage attributed to ntoskrnl.exe

The blue-screen guidance does not establish a specific cause of high CPU usage from the ntoskrnl.exe label alone. Treat the percentage as a symptom to investigate: note when it occurs, what else is running, and whether it started after a hardware, driver, app, or update change. Check the associated activity and recent changes rather than downloading or replacing the kernel file. The evidence here does not support a single command or fix that can be promised to resolve high CPU usage.

When recurring crashes need dump analysis or expert help

If the same stop error continues after basic checks, compare the exact stop code and circumstances across crashes. Windows may create a memory dump that contains information for further analysis. Microsoft describes dump analysis as an advanced troubleshooting method; debugger output can help determine a cause, but it requires interpreting crash data and is not a routine first step for everyone.

See Microsoft’s documentation on kernel-mode dump files and analyzing bug-check stop-code data. If you are not comfortable handling dumps, ask your PC manufacturer or a qualified technician to review the crash evidence.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle change matters for ongoing system maintenance, but it does not identify the cause of a particular blue screen. The troubleshooting steps above apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 where the relevant feature is available.
