If your YouTube radio livestream has audio but no video, the symptom alone does not identify the cause. First check whether video appears in your encoder’s preview and in a short local recording. If it is missing from both, investigate the video source, scene or input routing, and encoder. If both show video but YouTube does not, check Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and test the outbound connection.
Find where the video disappears
Audio reaching YouTube does not prove that the encoder is sending a valid video stream. Video may be missing at the source or encoder, or the stream may have a problem during YouTube ingestion or playback. Use these checks to narrow down the stage before changing equipment.
- Check the encoder preview. Look at the composed output for the active scene or stream. Confirm a visual source is present, enabled, and visible—not hidden, covered, or routed to a different scene.
- Make a short local recording, if practical. Check whether it contains the expected picture as well as audio.
- Compare the results. If the preview and recording are black or static, focus on the source, scene or input routing, and encoder. If they show the expected video but the YouTube live page does not, check YouTube’s incoming-stream status and the connection sending the stream.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing the encoder output and local archive, looking for source problems and encoder errors, and checking CPU load. These checks can help locate a fault; none proves a particular component is responsible in every case.
Check YouTube Live Control Room
Open the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and its messages, including their timestamps. YouTube says the dashboard detects errors in the incoming stream; messages can point to format or stream-configuration problems. The Live Streaming API also exposes configuration issues in health-status information. Use the message shown for your stream rather than assuming a black picture has one universal cause.

Verify the encoder’s video and audio settings
Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every setup.
- Check that video is actually included. An audio signal by itself does not establish that a valid video stream is being sent.
- Check codec and keyframe interval. Match YouTube’s guidance for the selected output format; keep the keyframe interval at the recommended two seconds and no more than four.
- Check bitrate and connection capacity. Use the recommendation for your specific codec and output settings, then test upload bitrate against the available internet connection.
- Prefer RTMPS for encrypted delivery. YouTube recommends RTMPS for sending a stream securely to its servers.
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes the incoming stream into output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to check that your encoder is sending the intended video stream. YouTube’s testing advice is: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Test the encoder and outbound connection
If the local preview or recording itself is faulty, check for encoder errors and high CPU load, update the encoder, and—if useful—test with a different encoder. OBS users can start with its Auto Configuration Wizard for basic settings and consult its streaming guidance for encoder configuration.

If the encoder preview and local recording look right but YouTube’s output does not, test the outbound connection to YouTube. YouTube’s general guidance recommends connection testing, but the symptom by itself does not establish that the network is at fault.

Troubleshooting: YouTube live stream audio but no video
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview is black or static. | Check that the intended visual source is active and visible in the output scene; inspect source routing and encoder errors. Make a local recording to see whether the same problem appears there. |
| The preview has video, but the local recording does not. | Inspect the encoder’s recording and output configuration, then make another short recording. The mismatch narrows the issue to the local output path but does not, on its own, identify a specific setting. |
| The preview and local recording show video, but the YouTube live page does not. | Review Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and messages. Then test the outbound connection and verify the stream’s format and configuration. |
| Live Control Room reports a format or configuration issue. | Compare the encoder’s codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and other selected output settings against YouTube’s current guidance for that codec and resolution. |
| The encoder output itself has errors or unstable performance. | Check encoder errors and CPU load, update the encoder, and consider a test with another encoder. These are troubleshooting steps, not proof that the encoder or CPU caused the fault. |
| You see a “black screen with audio” only on some viewers’ devices. | Compare the live output on another device or browser and check Live Control Room’s incoming-stream health. The phrase “YouTube livestream black screen with audio” describes the symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis. |
If you still cannot isolate it, note the encoder and version, whether video appears in preview and recording, the relevant YouTube health message and timestamp, and whether the issue affects all viewers. Those details distinguish source, encoder, ingestion, and viewer-side possibilities more effectively than buying hardware based on the symptom alone.
