A VR boundary that seems to disappear during streaming is not necessarily being switched off by the streaming app. In SteamVR, the Chaperone grid is a proximity warning: it appears as you approach the configured edge, and Steam warns it may not appear soon enough if you move quickly. Meta likewise describes boundary cues as tied to the mapped play area and headset position tracking. Check whether the cue is absent in the headset itself or only in a streamed game before changing settings.
Why the boundary can seem to disappear
The grid is usually a warning near the edge, not a permanent outline
Steam says Chaperone displays its grid as you approach the boundary you set. If you are standing near the center of the play area, seeing no grid is expected; it does not by itself show that streaming disabled the boundary. SteamVR Chaperone FAQ
Fast movement can outpace the cue
Steam warns: “Also, Chaperone may not display a boundary soon enough if you are moving quickly, for example if you run or lunge suddenly.” A late or missed warning during rapid movement is therefore a safety limitation, not reliable evidence of a streaming fault. SteamVR Chaperone FAQ
Streaming requirements do not establish a boundary setting
Steam Link’s requirements concern streaming compatibility, including the PC, SteamVR, headset/software support, and network. The requirements do not identify a boundary-visibility control or say that a weak router makes the boundary disappear. Steam Link for Meta, HTC and PICO headsets

A user report phrased the issue as “Boundary disappears after starting Quest Link,” but one report is anecdotal and does not show that Quest Link generally removes boundaries. Reddit report
How to check what is actually disappearing
- Pause first and clear the physical play area. Do not walk or lunge toward a suspected boundary to test it. Steam says Chaperone does not identify furniture, pets, floor or ceiling hazards, or overhead obstacles, and cautions that it is not a substitute for planning a safe play area or using a spotter. - Check the headset environment before launching the stream. Note whether the boundary is visible or triggers as you slowly approach the configured edge. A grid that is absent while you are centered may simply be behaving as a proximity cue.
- Check the mapped play area and position tracking. Meta describes boundary cues in relation to the perimeter set for the play area and notes that losing position tracking can be jarring. If the headset loses or drifts in tracking, treat that as a separate diagnostic clue rather than assuming the streaming app alone is responsible. Meta: Integrate Boundary
- Compare before and after streaming. Record whether the boundary worked in the headset before opening the stream, then check the headset environment and streamed game separately. This distinguishes a headset-level boundary issue from a cue that is absent only in one game or runtime.
- Identify the visual symptom. Note whether it is the boundary grid that vanishes, a transition to passthrough, or both. Meta says passthrough and scene understanding do not replace the boundary’s safety mechanisms. Meta: Passthrough
- Only then compare or restart the streaming session. If the problem occurs only on one route, note the headset model, OS version, streaming application, PC VR runtime, and whether tracking also drifts. There is no documented universal setting that fixes every case.
When Steam Link compatibility is relevant
If you are using Steam Link, its support page lists the current headset families and minimum software versions alongside PC and network requirements. The page can change, so check its live requirements for your specific headset rather than relying on a model/version list copied elsewhere. It specifies a 5 GHz Wi-Fi channel and Wi-Fi 5 minimum, but that is streaming compatibility guidance—not evidence that buying a router or changing Wi-Fi fixes boundary rendering. What to do if the issue persists
Keep the headset model and OS version, streaming app, PC VR runtime, and the point at which the cue disappears. Also record whether the symptom occurs in the headset home environment or only in one game, whether it is the boundary grid or passthrough, and whether position tracking drifts or drops. These details narrow down which system needs attention; the official guidance does not establish one fix for every headset and streaming route.
