Most nighttime outages come from one of three things: the camera loses power or network connection when it switches to night mode, the Wi-Fi or Ethernet path to it is marginal, or the app cannot reach the camera from where you are looking. Reolink documents a specific case in which a camera becomes inaccessible the moment its spotlight or infrared (IR) light turns on, and it recommends checking the power supply, the network path, firmware, and reset status. Other manufacturers’ guides point to ordinary Wi-Fi, router, internet, and setup problems that simply show up after dark. Start with the reversible checks below, then confirm the requirements for your exact model in the maker’s documentation.

What the nighttime timing tells you

When a camera works all day and fails after dark, the time of failure is the most useful clue you have. Reolink’s guide describes the pattern directly: when the spotlight or IR light is turned on, the camera cannot be accessed through the Reolink app or client software, and error messages such as “connection failed” or “Not connected” indicate that the camera is offline (Reolink Support, “Reolink Camera Offline when the Lights Come on”). That guide does not show that every nighttime dropout has the same cause, so treat the timing as a lead to test rather than a diagnosis.

Match your symptom to the most likely starting point:

  • Drops exactly when the IR or spotlight activates, and repeats: test power delivery and the camera’s behavior at that moment first.
  • Drops at a fixed clock time unrelated to the lights: look for router restarts, ISP maintenance windows, scheduled automations, or third-party integrations running at that time.
  • Connection weakens gradually through the evening with no link to the lights: check Wi-Fi signal at the mounting spot and the router before blaming the camera.
  • Camera shows its status light and local feed works, but the remote app says offline: the camera is probably fine; the problem sits on the internet, router, account, or app side.

Decide what “offline” actually means

“Offline” in a camera app can describe three different failures: the camera has no power, the camera has no network connection, or your phone cannot reach the camera from its current location. Each has different first tests.

What you observe Most likely area First test
Status light off, no response from the camera Power: adapter, outlet, cable, PoE port, or battery Confirm the original adapter and outlet, or the battery charge level
Status light on, app says offline on every device Camera network connection or the camera itself Check Wi-Fi signal at the mount and reboot the camera
Works on the home network, fails away from home Internet, router, account, or remote app path Check whether other devices reach the internet, then review the account and app
Works in one app or client but not another App or client software Try an alternate client, browser, or the NVR monitor if you have one
Drops only when IR or spotlight turns on Power sufficiency or camera behavior at illumination Run the power checks below before changing network settings

Step-by-step diagnostic sequence

  1. Record the failure. Note the exact time, whether the light had just turned on, the status light pattern, and the exact app error text. Changing things before you have this record makes the pattern harder to read.
  2. Test access from a second path. Try a phone or computer on the same local network, then the remote app from a different internet connection. Reolink specifically suggests changing the phone or computer network, stream mode, and software access when the light-activation symptom appears.
  3. Check power at the camera. Follow the power checks for adapter-powered, battery, or PoE models below.
  4. Check the network path. Confirm that other devices reach the internet, then check Wi-Fi signal, band, router state, and recent changes.
  5. Update and restart. Update the camera firmware and app, then reboot the camera and router when appropriate.
  6. Reset or escalate only after the above. A factory reset is a late step, and the maker’s documentation should guide any repair or replacement decision.

Power checks

Adapter-powered and battery cameras

  • Use the original adapter or the one the manufacturer specifies. Do not substitute a random adapter.
  • Reseat both ends of the cable and test a different working outlet.
  • For battery models, check the charge level. A low battery can look like a nighttime outage.

Lorex advises against disassembling or repairing a camera yourself, because doing so may affect the warranty (Lorex support article on offline cameras).

PoE and wired cameras

  • Confirm the required standard. TP-Link’s guide for the Tapo devices it covers calls for supported 802.3af or 802.3at active PoE at 48 V. That is brand-specific guidance, not a universal camera specification, so check your model’s documentation.
  • Check the switch or NVR budget. Compare total PoE capacity against every camera the switch or NVR powers.
  • Test a known-good cable and port. Move the camera to another compatible port, using a cable you know works.
  • Avoid passive injectors as a shortcut. Do not use a passive PoE injector to solve a power question unless the maker’s documentation names it as compatible.

Replace a supply, cable, or PoE accessory only after testing shows a specific fault, and only with a model-compatible part.

Network checks

Wi-Fi signal at the mounting spot

TP-Link’s guide says: “For the best Wi-Fi signal, position the Tapo device closer to the router and away from walls, furniture, and sources of interference such as microwave ovens or Bluetooth devices” (TP-Link Support, Troubleshooting Guide: Tapo Camera, Doorbell, or Smart Device Going Offline). Swann’s app recommends a signal strength of 80% or above for its listed standalone-camera models. That figure is Swann-specific and is not a universal threshold, but it gives you a reference point for checking the signal at the mount before and after any change.

Band, password, and router changes

  • Confirm which Wi-Fi band your camera supports and that the camera is connected to that band.
  • Verify the password. Check whether the network name (SSID) or password changed recently.
  • Note any router replacement, firmware update, or mesh change made in the last few days, since these often coincide with new dropouts.
  • Check for IP address conflicts, which Ring’s general offline-device guide lists among common causes (Ring Support, Fixing offline devices).

Internet and remote access

If local access works and remote access fails, the camera is usually still on the network. Check whether other devices reach the internet, whether your account is signed in correctly in the app, and whether your internet provider has an outage. Wyze’s support article on cameras that go offline while you are away from home covers the same remote-access question and is dated May 24, 2026 (Wyze Support, My camera is offline and I’m away from home).

When a Wi-Fi range extender helps and when it does not

A Wi-Fi range extender or mesh node is worth considering only when the camera’s signal is weak at its mounting spot and you cannot move the camera or router closer. TP-Link and Swann both present an extender as a conditional option. Swann’s guide says: “If moving them closer is not possible, consider using a Wi-Fi extender to expand the range of your Wi-Fi, giving better signal to your camera” (Swann Support, Why Is My Swann Standalone Camera Offline).
