A Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that audio is playing through your Pioneer radio. The radio may be on the wrong source, the phone may have media audio disabled or routed elsewhere, or the particular Pioneer model may support calls but not Bluetooth music. First identify whether music, calls, navigation prompts, or every source is silent; each can use a different audio path.
Check what kind of audio is missing
Music and other media commonly use Bluetooth A2DP, while hands-free calls use HFP. Navigation guidance may follow a different route again, especially if CarPlay or Android Auto is involved. Pioneer distinguishes these audio paths in its guidance on call audio.
- If music is silent but calls work, check the phone’s media-audio setting and the radio’s Bluetooth audio source.
- If calls are silent but music works, check call audio routing and the receiver’s phone-call settings.
- If navigation alone is silent, check the navigation app’s guidance and output settings, and establish whether audio is going through Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, or USB.
- If all audio is silent, compare Bluetooth with another receiver source before focusing only on pairing.
Try these checks in order
1. Select Bluetooth Audio and check volume
Start a known track in a media app and select Bluetooth Audio—or the similarly named Bluetooth source—on the Pioneer. Raise both the phone’s media volume and the receiver volume to a moderate level. A connected-device indicator alone does not show that the phone is sending media to the radio.
2. Check the phone’s Bluetooth audio settings
On Android, open the Pioneer entry in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and make sure media audio is enabled. If calls are also affected, check the phone-call option separately. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer. If the media-audio option is unavailable, or enabling it does not help, confirm that the exact Pioneer model supports Bluetooth music: some car stereos support Bluetooth calls without media playback, as Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance notes.

On iPhone, try restarting the phone and turning Bluetooth off and back on. If only one third-party app is silent, try another app. Apple also recommends checking for phone and car-stereo software updates and following the vehicle’s manual for its pairing procedure. 3. Test FM radio or another receiver source
Select FM radio or another source you know should work, at a moderate volume. If it plays, the receiver can produce sound, so focus on Bluetooth source selection, the phone’s audio settings, the app, or the pairing. If it is silent too, the fault may involve the receiver’s output setup or wiring rather than Bluetooth alone. Pioneer’s troubleshooting section for the DMH-ZF9650BT and DMH-ZF7650BT lists incorrectly connected cables as one possible cause of no sound; consult the manual for your model and do not alter installation wiring unless qualified. The Pioneer manual says to contact a dealer or authorized service facility if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem.

4. Remove the old pairing and reconnect
If the source and phone settings look right, delete the Pioneer from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices and remove the phone from the receiver’s paired-device list. Then pair them again using the instructions for the exact radio model. Pioneer recommends clearing saved pairing information for certain Android connection failures. The names and locations of these controls differ between phones and receivers.

Find the model number on the receiver or in its system information. Use that model’s manual to verify Bluetooth music support, source names, phone compatibility, firmware guidance, and output setup. The troubleshooting manual linked above is specifically for the DMH-ZF9650BT and DMH-ZF7650BT; do not assume its model-specific instructions apply to a different Pioneer radio.

If Bluetooth, FM, and other sources all remain silent after the basic checks, treat it as a receiver or installation problem and consult the correct manual or an authorized service provider rather than buying an adapter or changing wiring without confirming the cause.
