If your MacBook screen looks washed out, yellow, or unusually cool, first check macOS display settings rather than assuming the screen is damaged. True Tone, Night Shift, accessibility display options, and the selected color profile can all change how colors appear. These checks are reversible; if the image still looks abnormal afterward, the built-in display may need an in-person assessment.
Why does my MacBook screen look washed out?
Several software settings intentionally alter color or contrast. True Tone adapts color and intensity to the surrounding light; Night Shift makes the screen warmer; accessibility options can apply filters, tints, inversion, or contrast changes; and a changed color profile can affect the image. Lighting, viewing angle, and display age can also affect perceived color.
Check the settings below in order, changing one at a time and comparing the screen under consistent lighting. System Settings labels and available controls can vary with macOS version and Mac model.
How to check MacBook display settings

Turn off True Tone temporarily
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the built-in display if needed, and switch off True Tone. Apple explains that True Tone uses display sensors to adapt colors to the environment so white looks natural in different lighting (Apple Support: Use True Tone on your Mac). If whites or color temperature stop changing after you disable it, the adjustment was likely contributing to the appearance. True Tone is available only on supported displays, and some accessibility settings may turn it off.

Turn off Night Shift
In System Settings > Displays > Night Shift, switch Night Shift off temporarily or set its schedule to Off. Night Shift warms the screen, making whites look more yellow and reducing blue tones; this is an intended color adjustment, not evidence of display damage. Apple says Night Shift requires macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later and is available on Macs introduced in 2012 or later, and Mac Pro computers introduced in 2013 or later (Apple Support: Use Night Shift on your Mac). External-display behavior depends on the display. Apple also notes that Night Shift can make colors inaccurate relative to the content’s values (Set up your display for a specific workflow on Mac).

Review Accessibility display options
Open System Settings > Accessibility > Display. Check Color Filters, Color Tint, Invert Colors, and contrast controls. Turn off any option you did not intend to use, then compare the image again. These features can materially alter images and video, and accessibility shortcuts can toggle some display features (Apple Support: Change display settings for accessibility).

Check the selected color profile
In System Settings > Displays, inspect the selected color profile. If it was changed, choose the appropriate default or profile for that display. Apple places the profile menu in Displays settings; menu names can differ across macOS releases. A profile describes how the display represents color, and calibration creates a profile assigned to that display (Apple Support: Calibrate your Mac using the Display Calibrator Assistant).
Why does my Mac screen look yellow?
Night Shift is the first setting to check because its purpose is to shift colors warmer, especially according to its schedule. True Tone can also change the apparent warmth of white as ambient lighting changes. Temporarily disable both, then compare the screen in steady room lighting. If the yellow cast remains, check Accessibility display options and the selected profile before concluding that the panel has a fault.

How lighting and viewing angle affect color
Perceived color can vary with ambient light, the display’s position and viewing angle, and display age. Compare the screen in consistent lighting and from a consistent angle. If possible, check whether the same image looks normal on another display and whether the problem appears only in one app or item of content. These comparisons can help narrow down where the difference appears, but they do not diagnose the MacBook remotely.
Should you calibrate the display or buy a colorimeter?
For ordinary home or office use, calibration is usually unnecessary. Apple says, “Calibrating your display isn’t usually necessary for a Mac in a typical home or office environment” (Apple Support: Calibrate your Mac using the Display Calibrator Assistant).

Calibration is more relevant to color-critical work. Apple describes display presets as combinations of color space, white point, gamma, and brightness for particular workflow targets. Full calibration adjusts white point, primary colors, luminance, and gamma response and requires a compatible spectroradiometer or colorimeter. A measuring device is therefore an advanced, conditional tool—not a routine first fix. Confirm compatibility with the specific MacBook and display before buying one.

If the colors remain abnormal after checking the settings, compare another app or content item and, where possible, connect an external display. If the issue persists on the built-in screen, contact Apple or a qualified service provider for an assessment. Settings checks can rule out common adjustments, but they cannot rule out hardware problems or establish the cause without examining the device.
