Your iPhone may dim because it is adapting to room light, conserving battery, managing heat, preparing to lock, or showing its normal Always-On Lock Screen. The quickest fix is to note when the screen gets darker, then check the matching setting below. If the change happens only with flashing media, an accessibility feature may be responsible.
Start with the timing: when does your iPhone dim?

Menu names and availability can vary by iPhone model and iOS version. If you simply want to raise the brightness now, open Control Center and move the brightness slider, or go to Settings > Display & Brightness and adjust the slider.
Why does my iPhone screen keep getting dark?
Auto-Brightness is adapting to the room
Auto-Brightness uses the ambient-light sensor to adjust the screen: Apple says it lowers brightness in dark locations and raises it in bright ones. If the display changes as your surroundings change, this is the first setting to check. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. If it seems to adapt incorrectly, Apple recommends turning Auto-Brightness off and then back on. Apple’s brightness and color temperature guide explains the setting.

Low Power Mode reduces display brightness and sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds. A yellow battery icon in the status area indicates that it is active. On iPhone 15 and later, check Settings > Battery > Power Mode; on iPhone 14 and earlier, check Settings > Battery. See Apple’s Low Power Mode guidance for details.

The iPhone is too warm
When an iPhone gets too warm, its display may dim and its maximum brightness may be reduced until the device cools. Let it cool naturally and see whether normal brightness returns. Raising the brightness slider may not restore the usual maximum while this condition persists. Apple describes this behavior in its guidance on keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures.
Why does the screen dim before it locks?
Auto-Lock is the likely cause if the screen dims after you stop using or looking at the phone and then locks. To review the timer, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. A longer delay can keep the screen active longer, but Apple cautions that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption. Why does my iPhone Lock Screen look dim?
On supported models, Always-On display can leave a dimmed Lock Screen visible while the phone is locked or idle. Apple says the screen can turn completely dark in situations such as when the iPhone is face down or in a pocket. Check Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display to change the feature. In Apple’s model guidance current to May 15, 2026, supported models include iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, 15 Pro and Pro Max, 16 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max; Apple says Always-On is off by default on iPhone Air. Support can vary by model and software; Apple’s brightness guide has its current model details.

On supported Face ID iPhones, Attention Aware uses your attention to affect when the display dims. Apple says the display will not dim until you stop paying attention to the device. Review Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features. Apple’s cited guidance describes availability on iPhone X or later except iPhone SE, so this control is not present on every iPhone. Does the screen dim only with flashing or strobing media?
Check Dim Flashing Lights if the change occurs only while supported media containing flashing or strobing lights is playing. This accessibility feature can detect those effects and dim the display in real time. Find it at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Dim Flashing Lights. It is separate from Auto-Brightness, which responds to the light around the phone. Apple explains the feature in the iPhone User Guide’s screen-effects guidance.

True Tone adapts display color and intensity to ambient light, while Night Shift shifts colors warmer. Either can change how the screen looks without being the same as a general automatic brightness reduction. If the screen looks warmer or cooler rather than simply darker, review True Tone and Night Shift under Settings > Display & Brightness. What to do if none of these checks fixes it
- Set brightness manually: adjust the slider in Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Match the timing: use the table above to check the setting associated with the moment dimming occurs.
- Allow a warm phone to cool: then check whether its usual brightness returns.
- Seek help if the display remains abnormally dim: contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider if the behavior continues after the relevant checks. The right diagnosis depends on the iPhone model, iOS version, timing, and circumstances; persistent dimming alone does not establish that the display needs replacement.
