A screenshot’s pixel width and the browser’s CSS viewport width are different measurements. The viewport controls page layout; device scale and screenshot settings control how that layout maps to image pixels. Mobile emulation, the page’s viewport meta tag, and full-page or clipped capture can also affect what you see. To find the cause, compare the configured CSS viewport with the saved image dimensions and check each setting that can change either one.
First, identify which width is wrong
There are three separate things to compare:
- CSS viewport width: the width, in CSS pixels, that the browser makes available for page layout.
- Screenshot raster width: the number of pixels across the saved image. Device scale factor and screenshot scale can make this differ from the CSS viewport width.
- Capture extent: the region included in the screenshot: the visible viewport, a specified clip, or the full scrollable page.
A saved image that is twice as wide numerically as the requested viewport may reflect a device scale factor of two; it does not, by itself, prove that the browser laid out the page at twice the width. Check the browser configuration and the image dimensions separately.
Check the viewport and device settings
In Playwright, inspect the viewport configured for the browser context, any device preset, and any later call to page.setViewportSize(). The order matters: a preset can provide a viewport that later code overrides. Playwright documents viewport and device-emulation settings in its API parameters and emulation guide.
Then compare the CSS viewport width with the output image width. Playwright’s screenshot scale option determines how CSS pixels map to output pixels: device-scale capture can produce more raster pixels than the CSS viewport, while CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. Check the Page API for the available viewport and screenshot options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check mobile emulation and the page’s viewport meta tag
Mobile behavior involves both automation settings and page markup. In Playwright, isMobile controls whether the page’s meta viewport tag is taken into account. On narrow-screen browsers, without an appropriate viewport declaration, the page may use a wider virtual layout viewport and then scale down to fit. MDN describes this behavior and the viewport meta element.
A common declaration for responsive pages is:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width">
Check the actual HTML head and the automation context together. Changing the requested viewport alone may not produce the expected mobile layout if mobile emulation or viewport metadata differs from what you intended.

Check whether the capture is clipped or full-page
A viewport screenshot captures the visible area; a full-page screenshot can extend across the page’s scrollable content; and a clip can specify an output region distinct from the viewport. Confirm which mode is in use before treating the saved image’s dimensions as the browser viewport dimensions. Playwright documents its screenshot options in the Page API; Puppeteer documents clipping and full-page options.
Collect the settings needed to isolate the cause
Record these values from the same run. Without them, the image width alone cannot establish why a particular screenshot differs from expectation.

Troubleshoot common width mismatches
- Image is wider than the requested CSS viewport: compare the raster width with the device scale factor and screenshot scale before changing the viewport.
- Page layout behaves as if the viewport is wider on mobile: check the Playwright
isMobilesetting and whether the HTML includes an appropriate viewport meta declaration. - Configured width looks right but the result does not: look for a device preset or a later
page.setViewportSize()call that changes the effective viewport. - Screenshot dimensions exceed the visible window: check for full-page capture or a clip region; those define the captured extent rather than simply reporting the visible viewport.
- You cannot determine the cause from the image: capture the configuration and HTML head information listed above. A raster image does not reveal the CSS viewport width on its own.
