Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A Linux update can affect the kernel driver, input processing, desktop session, or drawing app—not just the tablet itself. To find the cause, check in order whether Linux detects the device, whether the input layer recognizes its tablet capabilities, and whether the desktop and apps receive pen events. A tablet that worked before the update makes a software regression plausible, but timing alone does not prove the update caused the failure.
First, identify what stopped working
“The tablet does not work” can mean several different things. Note whether the tablet is absent from the system, the pointer does not move, pressure is missing, buttons fail, or only one application has a problem. These distinctions point to different layers of the input path.
A tablet’s pen and pad buttons may appear as separate logical input devices, so partial behavior does not necessarily mean Linux failed to detect the entire tablet. The libinput tablet support documentation describes how tablet tools and pad controls are handled.
- Connect the tablet directly if possible, rather than through a hub or adapter.
- Check the system’s input-device list and note whether the tablet or its components appear.
- Record which functions fail: cursor movement, pressure, stylus buttons, pad buttons, or touch.
Check whether libinput recognizes the tablet
If your desktop uses libinput, inspect its device listing and debugging or recording output. The libinput tablet debugging guide documents this diagnostic message: “missing tablet capabilities: xy pen btn-stylus resolution. Ignoring this device.” It means libinput is rejecting the device because expected tablet information is missing; it does not by itself identify the exact cause.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Missing
xy: The required X/Y axes are absent. The documentation notes that a misappliedID_INPUT_TABLETudev tag can be involved. - Missing
penorbtn-stylus: Expected stylus-tool or button bits are absent, which can point to a kernel driver or device HID descriptor problem. - Missing
resolution: X/Y axis resolution is unset. The hardware database may provide a correction.
These clues are not a reason to edit udev rules or other system configuration blindly. Confirm the exact device and message first, then look for guidance specific to your tablet model and Linux distribution. The libinput 1.22.0 FAQ says ignored-tablet capability messages usually indicate a device or kernel-driver issue.
Separate kernel-driver support from userspace configuration
The kernel driver handles communication with the device; userspace components and the desktop session determine how that input is exposed and configured. An update can affect either part, so establish which layer sees the tablet before installing or changing drivers.

For Wacom tablets
Wacom’s Linux software has separate kernel and userspace components. Its driver basics guidance describes input-wacom as a standalone version of the kernel drivers and recommends installing available distribution updates first. It may help when newer kernel-driver support is needed but installing a newer kernel is not feasible. This advice applies to Wacom; do not assume it is the right fix for Huion, XP-Pen, or another brand.
The display server also matters. Wacom documents xf86-input-wacom for Xorg and libinput for Wayland-based systems in its driver overview. A configuration or utility for one session may not control the other. Avoid layering vendor tools, OpenTabletDriver, and kernel or Xorg changes together until you know which component currently handles the device.

Compare Wayland, Xorg, and drawing applications
If the pen moves the desktop pointer but pressure or drawing input fails, the tablet is reaching at least part of the input stack. Test a second tablet-aware drawing application. If both Wayland and Xorg sessions are already available, compare behavior with the same tablet and app in each; do not install or reconfigure a session just to run this test.
Wacom identifies Mutter (GNOME), KWin (KDE Plasma), and wlroots-based compositors as common Wayland compositors in its Wayland support guidance. That establishes broad protocol support, not identical behavior for every model, application, or software release. KDE’s KCM Tablet Handbook advises checking Linux Wacom or DIGImend support when a tablet is not detected and describes an Xorg configuration fallback. Treat that fallback as session-specific and consult your distribution’s current instructions before applying it.

Use the previous kernel as a diagnostic test
If the prior kernel is still installed, boot it once and test the same tablet, session, and application. If the problem disappears, that comparison strengthens the case that the kernel change is involved; it still does not establish a confirmed regression. You can make a similar comparison between installed Wayland and Xorg sessions.
- Record the current kernel and relevant input-driver or libinput package versions.
- Boot the previous kernel from your distribution’s boot menu, if available.
- Repeat the same tests and note whether detection, movement, pressure, or buttons change.
- Return to your normal kernel and preserve the results and relevant logs for a bug report.
Use rollback as evidence gathering, not as a permanent fix without understanding the cause. Do not describe the issue as a confirmed kernel regression unless it is reproducible or documented by the distribution or upstream project.

What to include in a useful bug report
Include enough detail for maintainers to distinguish a device, driver, session, or application problem:
- Tablet make and model, connection type, and whether it connects directly or through a hub.
- Linux distribution and release, plus the previous and current kernel versions.
- Desktop environment and session type: Wayland or Xorg.
- Relevant driver and libinput package versions.
- The precise failure: not detected, no pointer movement, no pressure, buttons only, or failure in one application.
- Device-listing and relevant log output, including the exact libinput capability message if present.
- Whether the previous kernel, another session, or another application changes the result.
There is no established general failure-rate figure for tablets after Linux updates, and the tablet model and software versions are essential to diagnosing an individual case.
