If your cell phone rings when someone calls your house phone, your home-phone service may be set to ring both numbers. Providers call this feature Simultaneous Ring, Multi-Ring, or a form of call forwarding. It routes a call placed to your home number to more than one destination; it does not necessarily mean the two phones are physically connected.
How a call to your house phone can ring your cell
Your home-phone provider can route an incoming call to the home phone and another destination, such as your cell number. Depending on the service, that second destination might instead be a mobile app or another landline. The names and available controls vary by provider and plan.
For example, Verizon lists Simultaneous Ring as a home-phone calling feature. Its support community describes the feature as ringing a landline and mobile at the same time. Verizon’s home-phone overview
Simultaneous ringing is different from forwarding your cell calls
Pay attention to which number the caller dialed. A home-phone feature can make a call to your house number ring your cell. Mobile Call Forwarding works in the opposite direction: it sends calls made to your cell number to another number. Verizon says its mobile does not ring while that forwarding is active, so mobile forwarding alone does not explain why your cell rings when someone calls your house.

Verizon lists *73 for turning off its mobile Call Forwarding. That instruction applies to Verizon mobile forwarding, not necessarily to a feature configured on your home-phone line. Verizon’s mobile Call Forwarding FAQ
Where to check the setting
- Identify the home-phone provider. Check whether the service is a traditional landline, cable or VoIP service, or another provider’s offering.
- Open the provider’s account or calling-feature settings. Look for Simultaneous Ring, Multi-Ring, Call Forwarding, or a list of destinations for incoming calls.
- Check whether your cell number is listed. If it is, the setting may be why both phones ring. Adjust or remove it only if you do not want calls to the home number reaching your cell.
- If you cannot find the control, contact the home-phone provider. Ask whether simultaneous ringing or forwarding to your cell number is active on the home line. There is no universal code or menu path established for all providers.
What provider settings can look like
Ooma’s documentation offers one VoIP example: its Call Forwarding settings let subscribers choose whether incoming calls ring a Telo-connected home phone, the Ooma mobile app, an external domestic landline or cell number, or a combination. Other providers may use different feature names, eligibility rules, and controls. If your account does not show a destination matching your cell number, the provider can confirm how calls to your home number are being routed.

If both phones ring normally and you want them to, there may be no fault to fix. If the behavior is unexpected, first ask the home-phone provider to verify its calling-feature settings. For accompanying problems such as no dial tone, Verizon suggests checking whether the phone needs power and isolating phones by disconnecting them and testing another phone. Those checks address general service problems, not a provider feature deliberately routing calls to multiple destinations.
