Clear audio does not rule out a video problem: YouTube tracks audio and video health separately. Find out where the choppiness starts before changing settings—check the encoder preview and local recording, OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators, YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, and playback on more than one device or network. Each points to a different part of the path, and the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.
First, locate where the video becomes choppy
A 24/7 stream passes through several stages: the encoder produces video, the network sends it to YouTube, YouTube processes it, and viewers receive playback. Compare those stages instead of assuming that clear audio means the internet connection is fine.
| What you observe | What it tells you | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| The OBS preview or a local recording is choppy | The problem is visible before you can blame YouTube playback. The observation does not by itself establish whether encoding, the source video, or another local issue is responsible. | Check whether the original video is smooth, then review OBS statistics and the stream-health messages. |
| The preview and local recording are smooth, but the YouTube player is choppy | The issue appears downstream of that local output, but it could still be at YouTube ingest, processing, or viewer playback. | Read Live Control Room health messages and test playback on another device and network. |
| Only one viewer, device, or network has trouble | The issue may be limited to that playback path; it does not prove the stream is healthy for everyone else. | Compare playback across more than one device and network, and check the archived stream after processing. |
| Multiple viewers see the same stutter | A shared ingest or stream issue becomes more plausible, but the observation alone does not establish its cause. | Compare OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator with YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
For a 24/7 kids’ stream, make a representative test with movement and audio, then monitor its health while it runs. A static image may not reveal the same issues as the content you actually plan to stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead the encoder and YouTube health signals
Check OBS statistics
In OBS, inspect the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while the stutter is happening. OBS says a rising dropped-frame count paired with a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That is evidence to investigate the outbound connection—not proof that every choppy stream has a bandwidth problem. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Check YouTube Live Control Room
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream-health information and read the specific messages displayed during a representative test. YouTube’s health documentation distinguishes issues such as high or low bitrate, high frame rate, long keyframe interval, codec problems, and video-ingest starvation. Its videoIngestionStarved description says: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. As such, viewers will experience buffering.” That describes the health condition; it does not establish that it is affecting your stream. See YouTube’s live-stream health documentation.
Audio and video health are reported separately, so clear audio alone cannot identify which video condition, if any, is present. Use the actual OBS and YouTube indicators rather than diagnosing from the sound.

Match stream settings to the connection and format
Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval together. YouTube’s figures below are recommended rates for the stated codec and format, not a guarantee that every stream at another rate will stutter or that every connection can sustain the listed rate.
| Video codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates; audio is separate. YouTube’s encoding guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds, and a frame rate up to 60 fps. Its listed video codecs include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Confirm that your encoder and chosen ingest settings match the stream you intend to send. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.

Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
A headline speed-test result is not the same as upload capacity that stays available throughout a continuous stream. YouTube recommends choosing a quality reliable for your connection and testing upload bitrate. If OBS’s connection indicators support a network-capacity problem, lower the configured video bitrate and test again. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when reducing bitrate; that is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a universal YouTube target. Leave room for normal variation and other network use rather than treating a brief maximum as a stable guarantee.
Reducing bitrate can make the stream easier to send, but it trades image quality for a lower data rate. Choose the resolution and frame rate that fit the connection instead of keeping a higher-quality setting that the evidence shows it cannot sustain.

Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
Try low-risk network checks before replacing equipment
- If you stream over Wi-Fi, test wired Ethernet. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A wired test helps isolate wireless instability; it does not prove that a new cable or router is needed.
- Check software that can interfere with the connection. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewall or security software, bundled network-prioritization or optimizer software, and network drivers. Change one thing at a time so you can see whether the health indicators change.
- Restart the modem or router when appropriate. If the issue persists, inspect the existing network cable and other network links, then try a known-good cable if a faulty cable is plausible.
- Use OBS’s remaining isolation checks. Its troubleshooting guide suggests trying another ingest server or testing another streaming service to help identify a service-specific issue. These checks can narrow the path; they do not guarantee a diagnosis.
- Contact your ISP if the connection problem remains. If the OBS indicators continue to show instability after local checks, ask the provider about the connection rather than buying equipment without evidence.
Dynamic bitrate is a fallback, not a repair
OBS can adjust bitrate dynamically when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce connection-related dropped frames, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can lower picture quality. Use it as a continuity trade-off, not as a substitute for identifying persistent instability.
Keep the stream appropriate and technically reliable
For a children’s channel, review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream requirements as well as stream health. A technically smooth stream does not establish that you have rights to the video or music, or that the content complies with YouTube’s rules. Use content you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s current guidance before running a continuous broadcast. In addition to the encoder settings above, YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio like the intended stream and monitoring stream health during operation.
