If a carrier usage log shows mobile data instead of a text entry, the message may have been sent through an internet-based service such as RCS or iMessage rather than SMS or MMS. A carrier’s data and text categories track different kinds of network activity, and the labels vary by provider. A log entry generally does not reveal the message itself.
Why messaging can appear as mobile data
SMS and MMS use carrier messaging services and may appear in a carrier’s text-usage category. RCS and iMessage can use Wi-Fi or cellular data, so they may instead be counted as data—or not appear in the carrier’s text log. The precise display depends on the carrier and how the message was sent.
AT&T, for example, says its text category shows SMS or MMS sent or received over its network, while its data category shows cellular and hotspot data use. It says iMessage and Android Advanced Messaging sent over Wi-Fi do not appear in text logs; when sent over AT&T’s mobile network, they appear as data rather than text. Google describes RCS as messaging over mobile data and Wi-Fi, while SMS and MMS go through the carrier. Apple notes that RCS on iPhone depends on software and carrier support, so availability and behavior can differ by device version, carrier, and configuration. Why a message may be missing from the text log
A missing entry does not prove that no message was sent or received. If the conversation used RCS or iMessage over Wi-Fi or mobile data, it may not have been recorded as carrier SMS or MMS. The same conversation can also switch transport: Google says RCS may fall back to SMS or MMS when participants do not have RCS enabled. Thus, messages in one thread can appear differently in usage records.
To interpret an entry, check whether it appears under text usage, cellular data, hotspot data, or an app-level data breakdown. Then check the messaging service and connection used at the time. A carrier’s own usage documentation is the best guide to its labels; Verizon, for example, describes its account usage views and message records separately from other providers. Can someone see the content of your texts on a carrier log?
A usage record is not necessarily a transcript. AT&T says its wireless usage details can show phone numbers, message type, and the time sent or received for messages made using the cellular network, but account users cannot see text or video message content there. Other carriers may present different fields, so check the provider’s policy for the account in question. AT&T: View wireless usage details

Why recent data totals may not match your activity yet
Usage records can take time to update. AT&T says mobile-data use may take two to five days to post; that estimate is specific to AT&T, and other carriers may use different reporting timelines. A recent data total can therefore lag behind activity on the phone.

What to check when an entry is still unclear
- Confirm which category contains the entry: text, mobile data, hotspot, or app-level data.
- Check whether the messaging app used SMS/MMS, RCS, or iMessage, and whether the phone was on Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- For RCS, consider whether all participants had RCS enabled; otherwise delivery may have switched to SMS or MMS.
- Compare the entry with your carrier’s current usage help or ask the carrier to explain its account record. Category names, available history, and reporting practices differ by provider.
