Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Double-sided pages usually print upside down because the selected binding edge does not match how the page is meant to turn. For portrait pages that should open like a book, choose Flip on Long Edge (or the equivalent long-edge setting). For pages that turn over the top, choose Flip on Short Edge. If you print both sides manually, reinserting the paper incorrectly can also invert the reverse side.
What makes the back of a page appear upside down?
Duplex printing puts content on both sides of the same sheet. The binding-edge setting tells the printer how to orient the reverse side in relation to the front when the sheet is turned. If that setting does not match how you plan to turn the page, the back can read upside down.
Page orientation and binding edge are separate controls: first choose portrait or landscape, then choose the edge that matches the intended turn. A separate option for reversing page orientation, if your driver offers one, is not the same as duplex binding.
Which duplex setting should you use?
| How you want to turn the page | Typical setting | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait pages opened left-to-right like a book | Flip on Long Edge, Long-Edge Binding, or equivalent | Reverse side is oriented for side binding |
| Pages turned over the top edge, like a notepad | Flip on Short Edge, Short-Edge Binding, or equivalent | Reverse side is oriented for top binding |
These are typical choices, not a guarantee for every layout: for landscape pages, consult the printer’s orientation diagram rather than applying a portrait setting automatically.

How to troubleshoot upside-down duplex pages
- Confirm orientation. In the document’s print dialog, check that the page is set to portrait or landscape as intended.
- Match the binding edge to the turn. For portrait pages that open like a book, select Flip on Long Edge or the equivalent. For top-bound pages, select Flip on Short Edge.
- Print a two-page test. Turn the sheet as you would in the finished document and check whether the back is upright. If it is not, try the other edge setting.
- For manual duplex, follow the reload instructions. If the printer prints one side and prompts you to reinsert the stack, use the diagram or instructions for that exact model. Feed paths vary, so there is no universal way to flip or rotate the stack.
- Check the selected printer and driver. Make sure the print job is going to the intended device and that its driver exposes the duplex option you selected. Consult the model’s manual if the setting or its effect is unclear.
Where to find the setting
Look in the print dialog under Layout, Setup, or the printer-specific options. Names and locations vary by application, operating system, driver, and device; the following are examples, not universal menu paths.
macOS
Apple’s Mac print settings describe Double-sided as printing on both sides. Apple identifies On (Short Edge) as the choice for binding at the top, and lists document Orientation separately. The double-sided control is available only when the printer supports it.

Windows and printer drivers
OKI documentation shows that drivers may use labels such as Long Edge and Short Edge, or Flip on Long Edge and Flip on Short Edge. On macOS, its examples include Long-Edge Binding, Short-Edge Binding, and On Short-Edge. Check the instructions for your model rather than assuming the same labels appear in every driver: OKI’s two-sided printing guidance.
Model-specific orientation diagrams
Sharp’s BP-22C25 manual maps portrait long-edge printing to side binding and portrait short-edge printing to top binding; its macOS labels vary by version. For landscape pages, use the manual’s diagram to identify the correct choice: Sharp BP-22C25 two-sided printing instructions.

What to do if the printer requires manual duplex
Automatic duplexing prints both sides without asking you to handle the paper between sides. Manual duplexing prints one side first and then asks you to reinsert the sheets. Microsoft advises checking the printer manual or manufacturer guidance; depending on the printer and input tray, the required reload direction differs. A test sheet can establish the correct handling for your specific device: Microsoft’s duplex-printing guidance.
HP likewise gives model- and tray-dependent reloading instructions. It also notes that duplex settings may carry over to the next print job, so check the setting again when a later job behaves unexpectedly: HP guidance for printing on both sides.
