If Copilot says, “It’s not you, it’s me. Something went wrong. I probably just need time to refresh,” first check where it fails: the Windows app, Copilot website, Edge sidebar, or Microsoft 365 Copilot. The message is generic, not a diagnostic code, so it does not identify one cause or guarantee a particular fix. Start with Microsoft’s built-in connectivity troubleshooter, then narrow the problem by checking the account, browser profile, app, and network—without resetting or deleting data until you understand the possible sign-in and saved-chat consequences.
First, find out where Copilot is failing
Before changing settings, note which Copilot surface shows the message and which still works. Try the website in a browser if the Windows app fails; if Edge’s sidebar fails, try the Copilot website or a separate browser profile. If available, check whether Microsoft 365 Copilot works. These comparisons can help narrow the problem, but they cannot establish its cause on their own.
- Only the Windows app fails: concentrate on the app and Windows updates.
- Only Edge’s sidebar or one browser profile fails: check the signed-in account, profile, and relevant site data.
- Several Copilot surfaces fail: check connectivity and possible network blockers before changing app or browser data.
- Another account or network behaves differently: record that difference; it may help support diagnose the issue, but it does not prove why it happened.
For example, Microsoft Q&A reports describe cases where the Edge sidebar failed while the website or mobile app worked, and a separate case where Microsoft 365 Copilot worked while Windows and web Copilot did not. Run Microsoft’s Copilot connectivity troubleshooter
For connection problems, Microsoft’s built-in diagnostic is the best first step. Microsoft says the Copilot connectivity troubleshooter checks firewall rules and other blockers, then returns findings and possible remedies. Microsoft Support: Copilot troubleshooters

- Open the Windows Get Help app.
- Search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter.
- Open the troubleshooter and follow its prompts.
- Review the findings and try any suggested remedy that fits your device and network.
Microsoft’s guidance is: “Use the Copilot connectivity troubleshooter when you are having difficulty connecting to Copilot.” The tool can identify possible blockers, but its results do not guarantee that it will resolve every occurrence of this message.
Check the connection and possible blockers
Confirm that other websites load. If you use a VPN, security product, firewall, or managed-network filter, one may affect the connection path, but the error message alone does not show that any of these is responsible.

- If your network rules allow it, briefly test without a VPN or filter. Restore your usual settings afterward.
- If practical, try another trusted network, such as a personal hotspot. Avoid public or unfamiliar networks for this test.
- On a work or school device or network, ask the administrator before changing security settings or bypassing a filter.
A Microsoft Community moderator suggested temporarily testing without a VPN and trying another Wi-Fi network or hotspot. Treat that as a diagnostic suggestion, not confirmation that VPNs or a particular network cause this error. Microsoft Q&A
If the Windows Copilot app is the only thing failing
Try lower-risk steps before resetting or reinstalling the app. Check for Windows and Copilot updates, then restart the device and test the app again. Community answers suggest these steps, along with the Windows app’s Advanced options, but do not promise they will fix the issue.

Repair or reset the app only after considering saved data
Windows may offer repair or reset controls for an app in its Advanced options. If the simpler checks do not help, you can consider those controls for Copilot; the exact location can vary by Windows version. Resetting, signing out, or reinstalling can affect local app state or require signing in again. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not guarantee that every conversation or result will be preserved through these actions.
Before proceeding, make sure you can access the account you use with Copilot and save or copy any information you cannot afford to lose. If preserving saved chats is your priority, do not assume that reset or reinstall is harmless; seek Microsoft Support guidance first.

If Copilot works elsewhere but not in a browser or Edge sidebar
Confirm that the browser is signed in to the Microsoft account you intend to use. Then test the Copilot website in a separate browser profile. If one profile fails while another works, the difference helps localize the issue to that profile, but it does not prove that the profile is corrupted.

When to contact Microsoft or report the problem
If the connectivity check and surface-specific steps do not help, use Get Help to run relevant diagnostics and review their output. For direct assistance, contact Microsoft Support. When contacting support, note the failing surface, whether another browser profile or account works, whether Microsoft 365 Copilot works, and whether a trusted alternate network changes the result.
