Start by checking whether the problem affects one site or many, then test the URL in another browser and a private window. Those scope checks narrow the cause faster than randomly reinstalling software.
First distinguish a literal about:blank page from a real address that opens to white or incomplete content. Also save any exact browser message or code: “hostname not resolved,” “timed out,” “connection reset,” “connection refused,” and “no data received” point to different branches of the diagnosis.
1. Identify what “blank” means
A literal about:blank page
If the address bar says about:blank, the browser is showing its built-in empty document. Check that you entered the intended web address and reload it. A bookmark, shortcut, script, or popup can also open a new tab without a destination.
A white page at the correct address
If the address bar contains the site you intended, the browser reached at least part of the navigation process. The page may have failed to load scripts, been blocked by an extension or security tool, received no usable data, or encountered a server-side error. Keep the address and any visible error text for later reporting.

2. Use the fastest scope test
- Open several unrelated sites. If they all fail, investigate the connection, device settings, DNS, security software, or ISP. If only one site is blank, concentrate on that site, browser profile, and site-specific data.
- Try the same URL in another browser. Working in a second browser points toward extensions, cached data, content blocking, or settings in the first browser. Failing everywhere keeps network and website-side causes in play.
- Open a private or Incognito window. A working private window makes existing cookies, cache, permissions, or an extension interaction likely. It is an isolation test, not a permanent fix.

These observations are clues, not proof. A site can fail in more than one way at once.
3. Work through the fixes in order
Step 1: Verify and reload the address
Look for misspellings, an unintended subdomain, or a stale bookmark. Copy the URL into a new tab, press Enter, and perform a normal reload. If the browser displays an explicit error, record its wording before trying other changes.
Step 2: Check the connection without assuming the router is at fault
Open unrelated sites or another network-connected app. Check whether the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi or wired network. Restarting a modem or router is a basic connection check when many sites fail; it will not repair a browser extension, blocked JavaScript, stale site data, or a site outage.
Step 3: Compare browsers
Use another installed browser with the exact same URL. If it loads there, return to the original browser and test its extensions, site data, and content settings. If it fails in both, continue with network, DNS, security, and site-side checks.

Step 4: Test privately, then isolate extensions
Open a private or Incognito window and visit the URL. If the page appears, disable extensions in the normal window, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script managers, and extensions that rewrite page content. Re-enable them one at a time and reload after each change until the conflict returns. Remove or reconfigure the extension responsible.
Step 5: Clear only the affected site’s data
Use the browser’s site-information or privacy settings to remove cookies, cached files, and stored data for the affected domain rather than wiping every site. Reload afterward. Clearing site data can sign you out, remove saved preferences, and require a fresh consent choice, so have your credentials available.
Step 6: Check JavaScript and blocked content
Modern sites often need JavaScript and other resources to build the visible page. Check the site’s permissions and the browser’s content-blocking controls. Temporarily allow scripts or required content for the trusted site, then reload. Do not broadly disable protections for every website.
Step 7: Review security software
Firewalls, antivirus products, anti-spyware tools, and tracking protection can block scripts, certificates, requests, or entire domains. Inspect their blocked-item or web-protection logs. If policy permits, test briefly with the relevant web filter paused, then turn protection back on and create a narrow exception only when you understand the risk.

Step 8: Check the device clock and DNS when many sites fail
An incorrect system date or time can prevent certificate validation. Set the clock to update automatically and retry. DNS problems can stop some or all hostnames from resolving; compare behavior on another network, such as a trusted mobile hotspot, to distinguish local or ISP trouble from a website problem. Avoid changing DNS settings blindly on managed or work devices.
Step 9: Decide whether the website is down
If the same URL remains blank in multiple browsers and on more than one network, the destination may be down, under maintenance, misconfigured, or returning an empty response. Keep the URL, time, browser names, and exact error text. Contact the site owner or your network support team rather than repeatedly deleting local data.
4. Why a page can be white even when the network works
JavaScript application failure
Some sites send a minimal HTML shell and draw the interface only after scripts run. A blocked script, incompatible extension, stale cached file, or server error can leave that shell looking like a white page.
Consent and popup interference
Cookie banners, newsletter overlays, and chat widgets can cover content or prevent the page from finishing its setup. Test in a private window and inspect content-blocking rules before concluding that the server is empty.

Partial or empty server responses
A timeout, reset, refused connection, or response with no data is not the same as a rendered blank page. The browser’s exact label is valuable evidence because it indicates whether the failure occurred during name lookup, connection, transfer, or rendering.

5. Troubleshooting branches by symptom
Only one page is blank in your usual browser
- Open the URL privately and in another browser.
- Disable extensions and content blockers for that domain.
- Clear that site’s data, then sign in again if required.
- Check JavaScript and site permissions.
Every site is blank or unreachable
- Verify the network connection on the device.
- Check system date and time.
- Review firewall and antivirus web filtering.
- Test another network to reveal DNS or ISP trouble.
- Contact network support if other devices show the same failure.
The browser reports a specific connection error
Preserve the exact wording. A hostname-resolution error directs you to the URL and DNS; a timeout suggests no timely response; a reset or refusal suggests the connection was interrupted or rejected; “no data received” means the browser connected but got no usable response. The labels do not identify a single guaranteed cause, so use them to choose the next test.

Stop local troubleshooting when the URL fails in multiple browsers, private mode, and a second network, or when other people report the same outage. Repeatedly clearing data or disabling protection can create new problems without fixing a server-side failure. Send the owner the URL, timestamp, browser and device, network used, screenshot if appropriate, and exact message.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I clear all browser history when one site is blank?
No. Clear the affected site’s cookies and cached data first; a full history wipe is usually unnecessary and may remove useful sessions and preferences.
Why does the page work in Incognito but not normally?
Private mode commonly bypasses existing site data and many extensions, so the result points toward a profile-specific conflict rather than proving the website is healthy for everyone.

Can a blank page mean the website is hacked?
A blank display alone cannot establish that. Browser settings, blocked scripts, network failures, and ordinary server outages can look identical; preserve the URL and error details before drawing conclusions.
