A screenshot API can return 400 Bad Request even when the page opens normally in your browser because the service validates the entire API request—not just the destination URL. The problem may be a missing field, unsupported option, malformed JSON, incorrectly encoded characters, or a destination the provider blocks. Check the response body and the provider’s own error documentation before changing the URL.
What “valid URL” means to a screenshot API
There are several distinct checks that people often collapse into “the URL is valid”:
- Syntax: the string is formatted as an address.
- Browser access: a browser can navigate to it from your network.
- Provider policy: the screenshot service permits its servers to fetch that destination.
A service may accept only absolute HTTP or HTTPS URLs, or may reject private, reserved, or otherwise restricted destinations to protect its infrastructure. These rules differ by provider. For example, Screenshot API’s documentation describes URL and destination validation, while ScreenshotEngine’s documentation describes public HTTP(S) targets and URL security checks. A URL that works on your machine can still be inaccessible or disallowed from the provider’s servers.
But the URL may not be the problem at all: a correctly formed url field does not make the rest of the request valid.

Common causes of a 400 response
Missing, misspelled, or wrongly typed fields
Check required fields, exact parameter names and casing, and expected value types. A service may expect a string where the client sends a number, or a field in the JSON body where the client puts it in the query string. Also verify that the request uses the documented HTTP method and endpoint. Provider documentation gives examples of 400 responses for missing or invalid fields, including ScreenshotAPI.net and Screenshot Studio.
Malformed JSON or incorrect parameter placement
If the endpoint expects JSON, invalid JSON syntax or a mismatched Content-Type can prevent the service from parsing the request. If it expects query parameters, placing options only in the body may have the same effect. Follow the endpoint’s current contract rather than assuming that two screenshot APIs accept the same request shape.

Unencoded special characters
Characters such as &, #, spaces, and non-ASCII characters can be interpreted as part of the API request instead of as part of the target URL unless they are encoded correctly. Cloudflare Support documentation states: “If the request contains a special character that is not properly URL Encoded (or percent-encoded), an HTTP Error 400 will be returned.” See Cloudflare’s HTTP 400 guidance. When passing a target URL as a query parameter, encode the parameter value using your HTTP client’s URL-encoding support; avoid manually concatenating a raw URL into a query string.
Unsupported or invalid options
The target might be valid while another option is not. Check output format, viewport dimensions, selector, proxy, geolocation, custom CSS or JavaScript, and any other options against the exact endpoint and plan you are using. Some services document these as separate validation errors—for example, ScreenshotAPI.net’s parameter documentation.

Destination blocked by provider policy
Confirm that the address uses an allowed scheme and does not resolve to localhost, a private network, or another blocked destination. Do not try to bypass a security rejection by disguising the target or routing around the provider’s safeguards; use a publicly accessible destination that complies with its policy, or ask the provider whether your use case is supported.
Diagnose the request in a reliable order
- Save the full failure details. Record the HTTP method, endpoint, status, response content type, response body, and request ID if present. Remove API keys, authorization headers, cookies, and sensitive query values before sharing logs or support requests.
- Read the response body. Look for a stable error code, message, and field-level details. A code such as
invalid_requestorinvalid_urlis more useful than the status alone. Provider-specific examples include Screenshot API’s error documentation, Screenshot API’s URL guidance, and Screenshot Studio’s documentation. - Compare the request with the provider’s contract. Verify the method, URL, required fields, field names and casing, types, JSON syntax, content type, and whether each option belongs in the query or body. Check the provider’s current documentation because APIs and validation rules can change.
- Test a minimal request. Use a simple, public HTTP(S) page and only the required fields. If that succeeds, add your options back one at a time until the request fails.
- Check URL encoding and destination policy. Ensure the HTTP client encodes special characters in the target URL, and confirm that the destination meets the provider’s scheme, accessibility, and security rules.
- Classify other statuses separately. A 401 or 403 commonly points to credentials or access restrictions; a 429 may indicate rate or quota limits; and 5xx responses may indicate rendering or upstream problems. Exact meanings vary, so consult that provider’s status and error documentation rather than treating every failure as a bad URL.
- Escalate with safe diagnostics if it persists. Send support the method, endpoint, redacted request, status and response body, approximate time, and request ID if available. Never include a secret API key in a ticket or log excerpt.
Tell request errors apart from rendering failures
A 400 usually points to a request the service could not accept, but status-code meanings are provider-specific. A target can also fail after request validation—for example, because a page times out, blocks automated access, or cannot be rendered. Some providers report those later failures separately from malformed requests; Screenshot API’s error guide and ScreenshotOne’s error guide describe distinctions between client-side and rendering or server-side problems.

Use the returned status and error code to determine which stage failed. Changing the URL is unlikely to fix an authentication, quota, or rendering problem, just as changing authentication will not fix a malformed request. Without the provider, request, and response body, there is no reliable way to identify the exact cause from the 400 status alone.
