Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA screenshot API can return an image with unexpected dimensions for three different reasons: the browser used a different CSS viewport than requested, the image was saved at device-pixel rather than CSS-pixel scale, or the capture covered a clip or full page instead of only the visible viewport. Check those settings separately; changing the viewport alone will not fix a scale or capture-region mismatch.
Separate viewport size, image scale, and capture region
“Viewport size” can refer to the dimensions that control webpage layout or the pixel dimensions of the resulting file. They are related, but not interchangeable.
| What to check | What it controls | What an unexpected result may mean |
|---|---|---|
| CSS viewport width and height | The browser’s page layout area and responsive behavior | The page may be rendering at a different breakpoint than requested. |
| Device scale factor and screenshot scale | How CSS pixels map to output image pixels | The saved image may have more pixels than the CSS viewport dimensions. |
| Capture region | Which part of the page is included | A clip may crop the image, or full-page mode may make it taller than the visible viewport. |
For example, a page can have the intended CSS viewport while its screenshot has larger pixel dimensions because it was captured at device scale. Conversely, an image with the expected pixel dimensions can still show the wrong responsive layout if the effective viewport was wrong.
Verify the effective viewport before capture
Do not rely only on the width and height you passed to an API wrapper. Confirm the browser page’s effective viewport immediately before the screenshot, and check whether the service or wrapper applies its own settings. Hosted APIs can differ; behavior documented for one browser library should not be assumed for every service.

In Chrome DevTools Protocol, Page.setDeviceMetricsOverride affects reported screen and inner-window dimensions as well as device-width and device-height media-query results. In Playwright, a page has its own viewport, while a browser context can configure viewport and screen properties for its pages. See the Playwright Page API, Puppeteer Page API, and Chrome DevTools Protocol device metrics documentation.
Set dimensions before navigation
Configure the viewport before loading the target site. Playwright notes that many sites do not expect a phone-sized page to change dimensions and recommends setting the viewport before navigation. Resizing after load can cause the site to react differently or leave you comparing a post-resize state with an initial layout.

Use page-level viewport sizing when only the page viewport needs to change. If you need deliberate control of both screen and viewport dimensions, configure both at the browser-context level. A page-level viewport setter resets the screen size, so avoid assuming a prior screen setting remains intact.
Check CSS pixels against output image pixels
CSS pixels describe the dimensions used for layout; image pixels describe the saved file. On a high-DPI configuration, one CSS pixel can map to multiple device pixels.

Playwright’s screenshot scale option distinguishes these cases: css produces one output pixel per CSS pixel, while device produces one output pixel per device pixel. If the viewport is correct but the image file is larger than expected, inspect the device scale factor and screenshot scale rather than changing the layout viewport.
Confirm whether the API captured a viewport, clip, or full page
A viewport screenshot captures the currently visible area. A clip captures a specified rectangle, so its dimensions can differ from the viewport. A full-page screenshot includes the scrollable page and will be taller than the visible viewport when the document scrolls. The Playwright Page API describes full-page capture this way: “When true, takes a screenshot of the full scrollable page, instead of the currently visible viewport.” See the Playwright Page API and the Chrome DevTools Protocol screenshot documentation.

Before treating an unexpectedly tall or cropped image as failed viewport emulation, inspect full-page and clip options in the request. With Chrome DevTools Protocol, review the relevant parameters for both Page.setDeviceMetricsOverride and Page.captureScreenshot, including clipping and capture beyond the viewport.
Debug the mismatch in a consistent order
- Record the request. Write down the requested width and height and the exact capture options.
- Measure the effective page viewport. Check its width and height immediately before capture, not just the input values supplied to the wrapper.
- Apply viewport and screen settings before navigation. If both matter, configure both deliberately rather than relying on a page setter to preserve screen dimensions.
- Compare pixel units. Record device scale factor and screenshot output scale; compare CSS viewport dimensions with the saved image’s pixel dimensions.
- Inspect the capture region. Determine whether the request captures the visible viewport, a clip, or the full scrollable page.
- Check the service schema and effective browser settings. For a hosted API, use its own documented parameters and response details; do not assume defaults from Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
- The site uses a mobile or desktop layout you did not request: verify the effective CSS viewport and set it before navigation. Check screen dimensions too if the site responds to device metrics.
- The layout looks right, but the file has too many or too few pixels: inspect device scale factor and screenshot output scale. CSS pixels and device pixels may not be one-to-one.
- The image is much taller than the requested height: check whether full-page capture is enabled. A full-page image includes scrollable content.
- The image is cropped or has unexpected dimensions: inspect clip coordinates and dimensions; a clip captures a rectangle rather than the whole viewport.
- The requested settings appear to have no effect: compare the request with the service’s effective browser settings and schema. Defaults and wrapper behavior are not established uniformly across hosted screenshot APIs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing the viewport after navigation change the screenshot?
Yes. A site can respond to resizing, so set the intended dimensions before loading it when possible.
Does a larger screenshot file prove the API used the wrong viewport?
No. Device-pixel output can be larger than the CSS viewport while the page layout uses the intended viewport.
