Sprite flicker and slowdown can happen in the same busy scene, but they are usually different problems. On the NES, flicker often comes from the graphics hardware’s limit of eight sprites on a horizontal scanline. Slowdown happens when the game’s code cannot finish its work within the time available for a frame. A scene full of enemies can strain both limits at once.

Why NES sprites flicker

The NES draws its picture one horizontal scanline at a time. Although a game can define more sprites overall, the graphics hardware can display only eight sprites on any one scanline. When a ninth or later sprite overlaps that same line, the PPU may leave it out.

This limit applies to every object sharing the line, not just enemies. A player character, weapon, and several foes can all compete for the same capacity. Tall or wide sprites may use capacity across multiple lines, so the visible result can be a character or part of one disappearing as it moves through a crowded area.

NESdev summarizes the cause: “Flicker is usually a result of having too many sprites in one horizontal scanline.” NESdev’s technical overview notes that developers can reorder sprites between frames. That spreads which objects are omitted: instead of one object staying invisible, different objects may appear and disappear on successive frames. The exact pattern depends on the game’s sprite ordering.

Why NES games slow down

Slowdown is about processing time, not the number of sprites the PPU can display on a line. The CPU handles game logic such as movement, collision checks, enemy behavior, and preparing updates. If that work takes longer than the time available for a frame, updates can be delayed or missed, which players perceive as slowdown.

The NESdev technical FAQ gives the NES CPU clock as about 1.79 MHz, but that figure alone does not determine how quickly a particular game runs. The amount of work the game performs and how it schedules that work matter. The FAQ describes programmers splitting work across successive frames; calculations that overrun can also lead to glitches or freezes. NESdev’s technical overview explains that the PPU produces video independently of the CPU’s calculations, so graphics output and game logic have distinct constraints.

For NTSC timing, the PPU reference describes 262 scanlines per frame, of which 240 are visible, and an approximately 2,270-CPU-cycle interval after NMI for updates before rendering resumes. That leaves developers a limited window to prepare data and manage the work needed for a frame. The NESdev PPU reference documents these timing details.

Why the symptoms can appear together

A crowded scene can put pressure on both systems. Many objects sharing a horizontal line can exceed the PPU’s sprite-selection limit, while more enemies and interactions can increase the CPU’s workload. But one symptom does not prove the other is happening: a game can flicker without slowing down, slow down without sprite flicker, or show both.

Other consoles have different sprite limits

The NES’s eight-sprites-per-scanline limit is not a rule for every retro console. The SNES has a higher per-line sprite allowance, but it also has another limit: its PPU documentation lists 32 sprites per scanline and a separate budget of 34 sprite tiles, or slivers, on a line. Exceeding either budget can cause parts of sprites to disappear. The SNES OBSEL reference and SNES PPU-register documentation describe these limits.

Because each system has its own graphics hardware and timing, the cause of a visual glitch or slowdown depends on the console and game. The figures here establish NES and SNES examples, not a universal limit for every vintage platform.

Why an emulator may look different

Some emulators do not enforce the NES’s original per-scanline sprite limit. A game may therefore look less flickery in an emulator than it does on original hardware. Reproducing the limit can also preserve the visual behavior developers had to work around. NESdev’s emulator overview discusses this difference; whether a limit can be changed, and what a setting is called, depends on the emulator and its version.
