If Google Search keeps asking you to complete a CAPTCHA in Chrome, Google says it may have detected unusual traffic coming from your computer network. That message does not, by itself, mean Chrome is broken. First check whether the challenge is on Google Search or another website: Google’s troubleshooting guidance applies to its own “unusual traffic” prompt, not every CAPTCHA shown in Chrome.
What the Google Search CAPTCHA means
Google says it may show a reCAPTCHA when its systems detect requests from your network that appear automated. Possible sources include automated programs or search scrapers, malware, another person or device using the same network, a VPN, or an IPv6 tunnel service. The prompt alone does not identify which source is responsible. Google’s explanation of unusual traffic describes the message and its suggested next steps.
A CAPTCHA is a checkpoint: completing it lets you continue using Google. If it returns repeatedly, Google recommends investigating the traffic rather than assuming that solving the challenge has addressed its source.
Work through these checks in order
- Confirm which site shows the challenge. If the message appears on Google Search and mentions unusual traffic from your computer network, use the steps below. If it appears on another site, that site’s own support guidance is the relevant place to start.
- Complete the challenge once. Solve Google’s reCAPTCHA to continue. If it does not appear properly or cannot be used, Google advises checking that your browser is supported by reCAPTCHA and that JavaScript is enabled.
- Consider whether other devices share your connection. Automated requests may come from a program or service, or from another person or device on a shared network. If you use a work, school, or other managed connection, ask its administrator or IT professional to investigate the source.
- Check for a VPN or tunnel service. Google identifies VPNs and IPv6 tunnel services as possible contributors. If you use one, Google’s suggested options are to uninstall the VPN or contact its provider. This is a diagnostic step, not a reason to buy a VPN.
- Investigate possible malware. If the prompt persists, Google recommends learning how to detect and remove malware. Its guidance does not endorse a specific security product.
- Contact the relevant network provider. If you cannot identify the source, Google advises contacting your internet provider. For a managed network, contact its administrator; if a VPN or tunnel may be involved, contact that provider.
Choose the next step based on your connection
- Only one device seems affected: check that device for automated services or possible malware.
- Several people or devices use the same network: ask the network administrator or IT professional to investigate traffic across the shared connection.
- You use a VPN or IPv6 tunnel: check with the service provider, or try Google’s suggested diagnostic step of uninstalling the VPN.
- You cannot identify a likely source: contact your internet provider. Google Search Help’s instruction is: “Contact your internet provider about the error.”
What this CAPTCHA does not establish
Google’s guidance does not say which possible cause is most likely, how long a repeated challenge will last, or that any single remedy will work for everyone. It also does not recommend buying a router, VPN, or malware-removal product to resolve the message. Treat the CAPTCHA as a signal to check the connection and its traffic, not as proof that Chrome has failed or that a particular device or service is at fault.
