Google specifically lists search scrapers and software that checks rankings among examples of automated traffic. A challenge does not identify the exact trigger, and it does not by itself mean the screenshot machine is infected.
Why Google shows a CAPTCHA on an automated Search screenshot
Google’s Search Help says it counts searches sent by robots, computer programs, automated services, and search scrapers. It also names software that sends searches to determine how a site or page ranks. Google Search Central says automated queries that scrape results for rank-checking, or otherwise access Google Search without express permission, violate its spam policies and Terms of Service. Google Search Help and Google Search Central’s spam policies describe the relevant examples and policy boundary.
In other words, the CAPTCHA is a symptom that the Search request has triggered Google’s controls. Google does not publish the precise detection threshold or explain which signals caused a particular challenge. The notice is not proof of malware, nor does it reveal a reliable request rate or cooldown period.
First decide whether a person or an automated job is seeing it
For ordinary browsing
If you are using Google Search yourself and see “Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network,” complete the displayed reCAPTCHA to confirm that you are a person and continue. Google notes that activity from other people or devices sharing a school, work, VPN, or ISP network can also be relevant; the message does not necessarily mean your own device generated the searches. See Google’s unusual-traffic troubleshooting guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a screenshot or rank-checking pipeline
If your program is capturing Google Search results, the automation itself may be sending the traffic Google identifies as automated. Do not treat CAPTCHA bypassing as a pipeline fix. Stop automated Google Search requests unless the access is expressly permitted, and use a data source or method authorized for your intended use. Google’s Terms also prohibit bypassing its systems or protective measures; consult the Google Terms of Service and the terms that apply to your use.
Troubleshoot a CAPTCHA during normal human browsing
- Solve the challenge shown by Google. This is Google’s immediate step for confirming a human visitor and continuing Search.
- Check the device if the warning returns. Review it for malware and consider whether browser software or other applications might be issuing searches. Google identifies malware as one possible cause, not the only one.
- Check shared-network activity. On a home, school, or business network, ask the network administrator or IT professional whether another user or device is generating automated traffic.
- Review VPN or IPv6 tunnel use. Google says some VPNs and tunnel services can make it difficult to distinguish abusive from non-abusive traffic. Contact the provider or, where appropriate, try uninstalling the VPN.
- Contact your ISP if the source is unclear. Google says activity from other people using the same provider may be involved.
- If the CAPTCHA does not display, check browser support and JavaScript. Google recommends checking that the browser supports reCAPTCHA and that JavaScript is enabled.
Google does not promise that switching networks, clearing cookies, rebooting a router, or waiting a particular number of minutes will resolve the warning. Its help page does not give a guaranteed challenge duration.

What not to do in an automated pipeline
- Do not rotate IP addresses or use proxies to keep unauthorized Search scraping running.
- Do not spoof browser fingerprints or disguise automation as a human visitor.
- Do not solve challenges at scale as a workaround for Google’s controls.
- Do not assume a fixed request-per-minute threshold or guaranteed cooldown; Google’s public guidance does not state one.
Google Search Central’s exact policy sentence is: “Such activities violate our spam policies and the Google Terms of Service.” In context, “such activities” means machine-generated traffic, including automated queries that scrape results for rank-checking or other automated access to Google Search without express permission. Read the policy in context.
Or skip the browser setup
For screenshots of sites you are authorized to capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This does not authorize automated access to Google Search or bypass its controls; use a permitted source for search-result data.
