YouTube’s 12-hour guidance is about whether a livestream is automatically archived—not a general rule that the live broadcast stops after 12 hours. If viewers lost the live show, check the event’s status and error message in YouTube Live Control Room, then investigate the encoder and connection. If the broadcast finished but no replay appeared, the archive limit may be relevant.

Does YouTube automatically stop livestreams after 12 hours?

YouTube’s official guidance describes a 12-hour threshold for automatic archiving, not a universal cutoff for the broadcast itself. YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you,” and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” The guidance does not establish a podcast-specific cutoff after several hours.

That distinction matters: a broadcast ending and a replay not appearing are different problems. A stream that went offline needs troubleshooting based on its event status, encoder, and connection; an absent archive may relate to the 12-hour warning. YouTube does not identify the cause of any particular stream ending without its event details.

First identify what “stop” means

  • Viewers lost the live broadcast: Check whether the event ended in Live Control Room and inspect the status and error details.
  • The encoder stopped sending: Check whether the encoder or computer stopped, lost its connection, or stopped sending content.
  • The show finished, but no replay appeared: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. YouTube says an archive for a longer stream may not be captured.

How to diagnose a broadcast that ended

  1. Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Review the stream status and any specific error message. YouTube’s metrics guidance says the status includes error messages and instructions: See your live stream’s metrics.
  2. Check what the encoder did. YouTube’s encoder workflow ends a stream by stopping content from the encoder. If the encoder stopped or lost its connection, that may explain why content stopped reaching YouTube. Consult Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Review the connection. A connectivity problem is one possible cause, not a diagnosis: YouTube notes that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its streaming tips cover upload bandwidth and connectivity.
  4. For the next show, monitor both ends. Keep an eye on the live event and confirm the local recording file is growing. YouTube’s live streaming tips include monitoring the event and checking the local archive file.

How to protect the podcast recording

A local recording is a preservation backup, not a fix for a live broadcast interruption. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup and cautions that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the full program matters, record it locally and verify the file is being saved while the show is running. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
