Repeatable builds, automated tests, versioned dependencies, simulation, and controlled releases help teams find integration problems before new software changes robot behavior in the field.
What DevOps means in a robotics context
DevOps is a set of practices for making software delivery repeatable and observable: teams automate building and testing, manage changes to code and dependencies, and control how software moves into use. In robotics, that process must account for the system around the code, including the operating system, middleware, drivers, sensors, actuators, and physical environment.
ROS is one example, not a requirement for every robotics team. The ROS 2 documentation describes ROS as “an open-source ecosystem that provides the framework, tools, and libraries for building, deploying, running, and maintaining robotic applications.” Its documentation describes ROS 2 as the current actively developed version. ROS 2 Documentation: About ROS
A change that builds successfully can still fail when integrated with a particular driver, ROS distribution, or robot configuration. Hardware revisions, timing, sensor conditions, and differences between test and field environments are additional engineering considerations. A disciplined delivery workflow gives teams earlier, more repeatable opportunities to detect such mismatches; it does not make them disappear.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How a robotics delivery workflow can work
There is no single required ROS 2 pipeline. The tools and platforms available differ, so teams should adapt the stages to their robot, risk, and release process. One practical sequence is:
- Commit a change. Keep code and relevant configuration changes under version control so the team can identify what changed.
- Build the ROS workspace. Use a defined environment and dependency set, and make the target ROS distribution and operating system explicit. ROS distribution support varies by platform; the ROS documentation provides release and platform information.
- Run package tests and checks. Automate software tests and relevant static or formatting checks where appropriate. A build or unit test is an early quality signal, not evidence that the complete robot will behave correctly.
- Test integrated behavior in simulation. Exercise components together in repeatable software-in-the-loop scenarios before trying the change on physical hardware.
- Create a versioned artifact. Record the code and dependency versions used to produce the build, so a deployed binary can be traced to its inputs.
- Validate on representative hardware. Test the artifact on a suitable robot or hardware setup, including the relevant sensors, actuators, and operating conditions.
- Release deliberately. Deploy to the intended robot or fleet in controlled stages, keep visibility into which version runs where, and plan how to restore a known-good version if the release causes problems.
This is practical guidance synthesized from CI tooling, simulation, platform compatibility, and security considerations—not a mandatory ROS 2 deployment method. For an example of CI tooling for ROS projects, see the industrial_ci project; its documentation notes that setup can differ among CI providers.

Why simulation helps—and where it stops
Simulation makes it possible to repeat software-in-the-loop tests before deploying a change to a physical robot. That supports faster iteration on integrated behavior and lets a team test scenarios without relying on a robot being available for every software change. Intel’s Robotics AI Suite documentation, for example, describes a specific setup using ROS 2 Jazzy, Ubuntu 24.04, and Gazebo Harmonic; those versions are specific to that suite, not general ROS 2 requirements. Intel Robotics AI Suite documentation
A passing simulation is not proof of performance in every real-world condition. Simulation cannot establish that the physical robot, its sensors, and its operating environment will match every modeled assumption. Keep hardware testing and field-based validation in the quality strategy. The ROS-RVFT guidelines cover development and QA practices that include headless simulation as well as field-based testing. What to evaluate in a robotics CI/CD workflow
When comparing a team’s current process with a proposed workflow or tool, look beyond whether it can run a build. Assess the full path from source change to robot behavior.
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Test fidelity | Which checks run at the unit, package, integration, simulation, and physical-hardware stages? What important behaviors are only checked on a real robot? |
| Repeatability | Can the team rebuild and retest a change using defined dependencies and a known environment, rather than relying on undocumented workstation state? |
| Compatibility | Are the supported ROS distributions, operating systems, hardware, and relevant device configurations explicit in the build and test setup? |
| Deployment control | Can engineers see which software version is running on each robot, manage the scope of a release, and recover to a known-good version? |
| Security and provenance | Who can modify the build system, where are artifacts produced, and can a deployed binary be traced to its source and dependencies? |
Why build infrastructure is part of robot security
Build systems are not merely convenience tools. The ROS 2 threat model describes a path in which a compromised developer workstation or build farm could introduce a vulnerable binary that is later deployed to a robot. Protecting source code and the machines and credentials used to build software is therefore part of protecting the robot software supply chain. ROS 2 threat model

Teams should consider who can change code and build configuration, how dependencies are controlled, and whether release artifacts have traceable origins. These controls complement testing: tests can reveal some defects, but a successful test run alone does not establish that a build process or artifact is trustworthy.
