If width seems to have no effect on an HTML <a> link, the usual reason is that links are inline by default. Set the link to inline-block if it should remain alongside text, or block if it should occupy its own row. Then apply a width that fits the intended layout.
Why the width declaration appears to do nothing
An anchor such as <a href="/page">Read more</a> is inline by default. The width property does not size a non-replaced inline element like a block box, so adding width: 12rem alone will not give the link a 12-rem-wide box. See MDN’s display reference and MDN’s width reference.
Choose the display behavior that matches the layout

Apply the fix
Choose one of these patterns. Replace the class name and width with values suited to your page.
Keep the link alongside surrounding content

}A percentage width is based on the containing block, not automatically the whole screen. The parent’s size and other layout constraints can limit how wide the link becomes. Changing width to 100% without changing the anchor’s display does not solve the inline-element issue. MDN’s width reference explains the property and its sizing behavior.

If the link still is not the expected width
- Inspect the anchor’s computed
displayin your browser’s developer tools. Confirm that the intendedinline-blockorblockrule is applied. - Check the containing block’s width if you used a percentage. A link cannot become wider than the layout space available to it.
- Review the element’s other sizing and layout rules. The exact cause depends on the page’s markup and styles; the width declaration alone does not identify a particular conflict.
When you only need a larger click target
If your goal is to make a link easier to tap or click rather than to force a particular width, add padding. Use inline-block when the link needs a box that can be sized and padded while remaining in inline flow:
