Complexity makes test automation harder because it multiplies the conditions a test suite must represent, execute, and diagnose. Exhaustively testing every combination is usually impractical. Teams can control the scope with carefully modeled interaction tests, representative input values, and reliable failure analysis—but those choices take judgment and ongoing maintenance.

How complexity expands the test space

A software system can vary across inputs, user states, configurations, dependencies, and timing. Each parameter may have several possible values; combining them creates a much larger set of possible behaviors than any one parameter suggests. Changes add another burden: tests must keep representing the system as its behavior and interfaces evolve.

For discrete parameters, the number of combinations can grow quickly enough to make exhaustive execution impractical. In their 2004 paper Software Fault Complexity and Implications for Software Testing, D. Richard Kuhn, D. Wallace, and A. M. Gallo state, “Exhaustive testing of computer software is intractable.” Their work motivates a more targeted approach: test interactions among a selected number of parameters rather than attempting every possible combination.

Interaction testing narrows the work, not the risk to zero

The paper summarizes empirical results suggesting that failures in studied domains were often caused by combinations of relatively few conditions. If a tester assumes that relevant faults are triggered by combinations of no more than t parameters, covering every t-way combination can provide a practical approximation for discrete values. That conclusion depends on the assumption: it does not prove that every fault in every system will be found, and it is not a license to call a pairwise or other t-way suite exhaustive.

The selected interaction strength should reflect the system’s risk and the consequences of missing behavior. A lower strength can reduce test volume, while stronger interaction coverage addresses more complex combinations but usually requires more tests and execution time. The team still needs to identify important parameters and constraints before a generator can produce useful cases.

Why modeling inputs is real test work

Automated generation does not remove the need to decide what the system’s meaningful conditions are. Test designers must identify parameters, choose representative values, express constraints between them, and explain why the resulting coverage is adequate for the risk. A National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) case study of the ACTS test-generation tool describes input-space modeling as a significant undertaking. Its results show combinatorial testing’s potential in that studied system, not a universal measure of effectiveness or effort.

Continuous values need representative partitions

Inputs such as distance, time, or money can take extremely many values. NIST’s guidance recommends dividing continuous values into subsets relevant to requirements, using equivalence partitioning and boundary-value analysis. For example, if a fee changes at a threshold, test values on either side of that threshold as well as the boundary itself; include representative values within the relevant ranges. The requirements—not a generator alone—should determine those partitions.

Document which values and boundaries were selected and which were not. A test suite cannot include billions of possible values, and partitioning is a reasoned sampling strategy rather than proof that untested values are safe.

Automation adds execution and maintenance costs

As an application, its test suite, or the supporting system grows, running and maintaining tests can become harder. A 2026 survey of Selenium-based automation in Information and Software Technology reports challenges that include long execution times, difficulty diagnosing failures, maintainability, assertion difficulty, asynchronous behavior, and brittle tests. The reported average ratings were 3.43 for assertability, 3.24 for asynchrony, and 3.15 for brittleness. The available survey excerpt does not specify the rating scale, so these figures should not be interpreted as percentages, prevalence rates, or comparisons with other tools.

A failing test is a signal to investigate

A failed check may indicate an application defect, an incorrect test script or assertion, a test-environment problem, or a timing and synchronization issue. These causes can be difficult to distinguish. Automation provides useful feedback only when the team can determine what a failure means and reproduce the conditions that caused it.

Flaky results erode confidence

A flaky test passes and fails without a relevant code change. A 2023 multivocal review describes flakiness as reducing testing effectiveness and efficiency and delaying releases; test-order dependency and concurrency are among the areas it reports as widely studied. Mozilla Foundation’s summary of developer research also describes developers’ difficulty reproducing flaky behavior and finding its cause. In systems with many interacting parts, those conditions can make diagnosis more burdensome; that is a practical inference, not a quantified causal finding from the Mozilla summary.

How to make complex automation manageable

  1. Model the risk-relevant space. List important parameters, their meaningful values, and constraints. Record why each is included; modeling is part of the work, not merely setup for a generator.
  2. Choose interaction strength deliberately. Use combinatorial or t-way coverage when interactions matter and exhaustive combinations are infeasible. State the chosen strength and the assumptions behind it. Do not claim complete coverage of all behaviors unless the relevant assumptions support that claim.
  3. Partition continuous inputs from requirements. Apply equivalence classes and boundary-value analysis to select representative values, especially around thresholds and invalid ranges.
  4. Budget for execution and upkeep. Consider how many tests the strategy generates, how long they take to run, how readily failures can be diagnosed, and how often the model and checks will need updating as the application changes.
  5. Investigate inconsistent failures. Separate application behavior from test code, assertions, synchronization, and environment conditions. Track reproducibility and root cause instead of allowing flaky results to quietly weaken trust in the suite.

There is no universally best interaction strength or test architecture established by these sources. A reasonable strategy balances the interactions that matter, the assumptions made about values, generation and execution cost, maintainability, diagnosis, and the confidence required by the system’s risk.

Where screenshot capture fits in browser testing

For a browser test that needs an image of a rendered page, a screenshot service can capture visual evidence; it does not replace assertions, test-space modeling, or failure diagnosis. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its role here is limited to capturing pages for visual checks or records, not deciding whether a test passed.

Or skip the browser setup:

A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. The cURL example below saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API parameters and options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pairwise testing find every software defect?

No. Pairwise coverage exercises every pair of selected parameter values, but defects can depend on more than two conditions or on conditions the model did not include.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can test generation choose the right values without a person modeling them?

Not reliably from the evidence described here. Test designers still need to identify relevant parameters, values, boundaries, and constraints.

Do these findings show that one test framework is best for complex systems?

No. The sources do not establish a controlled comparison across frameworks or test levels.
