Chrome moved from four-week to two-week milestone releases on September 8, 2026, beginning with Chrome 153 on desktop, Android and iOS. For most users, that means new features, performance work, bug fixes and security changes can arrive sooner. Developers have less time between milestones to catch compatibility problems, while organizations that need a slower pace can choose Chrome Extended Stable, which updates milestones every eight weeks.

What changed in Chrome’s release schedule?

Google announced on March 3, 2026, that Chrome would move from a four-week milestone cadence to a two-week cadence starting in September. The change took effect with Chrome 153 on September 8, 2026, across desktop, Android and iOS. Google had used a four-week milestone cadence since 2021, when it had shortened the earlier six-week cycle. (Google’s announcement; Chrome 153 launch post)

Google scheduled Chrome 154 for Stable on September 22, 2026, following Beta testing. That illustrates the new rhythm: successive Stable milestones are planned two weeks apart, rather than four. Check Google’s release calendar for current dates, since planned milestone dates can change.

Why is Chrome updating more often?

Google says shorter intervals let it deliver features, performance improvements, bug fixes and security changes sooner. The company describes the change as a response to a fast-moving web and as a continuation of its earlier move from six-week to four-week releases. It has not published a quantified estimate of how much faster a particular fix will reach users, so the benefit is best understood as a shorter potential wait between milestones—not a guaranteed delivery time for every fix.

What does the two-week cycle mean for Chrome users?

Chrome Stable will receive milestone updates more frequently. Users may see new capabilities and improvements sooner, alongside fixes and security changes. The cadence does not mean every update contains a major visible feature, nor does it establish that every security fix waits for a milestone; Google can issue updates as needed.

To check for updates on desktop, open Chrome’s three-dot menu and go to Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on that page; follow any prompt to relaunch the browser and complete an update. Android and iOS updates are delivered through their respective app update mechanisms.

How do Chrome channels differ?

Chrome offers Stable, Extended Stable, Beta, Dev and Canary channels. Stable is the regular release channel. Extended Stable gives organizations a slower milestone pace. Beta, Dev and Canary expose upcoming work earlier, with progressively less maturity and greater change risk; they are not substitutes for Stable when reliability is the priority. Refer to Google’s Chrome release channels documentation for current channel details.

Channel Milestone pace or position Practical use
Stable Every two weeks under the schedule launched in September 2026 Normal use and the version most users receive
Extended Stable Every eight weeks Organizations that need more time to validate changes
Beta Earlier preview of an upcoming Stable milestone Testing upcoming changes before broad Stable deployment
Dev Earlier preview than Beta Development and early compatibility checks; expect more change
Canary Earliest preview Experimental testing; expect the highest instability of these channels

Google’s channel guidance describes Beta, Dev and Canary as earlier previews; consult the official documentation for current operational details and availability.

What should developers do with less time between milestones?

Google recommends keeping Beta and Stable available side by side so teams can test upcoming changes before most users receive them. With milestones arriving more often, make that validation a recurring part of release work rather than a last-minute check.

  1. Install Beta alongside Stable. Use Stable to represent the current user baseline and Beta to check the upcoming milestone.
  2. Track milestone dates and release notes. Follow the official release calendar and Chrome release updates to know what is changing and when.
  3. Run automated regression checks against Beta. Prioritize important user journeys, web-platform dependencies and browser APIs your product relies on.
  4. Check extensions as well as web pages. Verify that critical extension workflows continue to work with each milestone.
  5. Investigate failures before Stable rollout. Reproduce issues on both channels, identify whether the change is browser- or application-related, and report relevant problems through the appropriate Chromium or Chrome developer channel.

Beta testing offers a preview, not a guarantee that every issue will be found before Stable. Continue monitoring production after each update.

How should organizations manage the faster cadence?

Google’s Enterprise and Education documentation says administrators can use Extended Stable when a two-week milestone pace does not leave enough time for validation. Extended Stable has a milestone every eight weeks: Google maintains the milestone branch for six additional weeks and back-ports important security fixes during that period. It is not simply an eight-week delay with no security maintenance. See Google’s Extended Stable documentation and release-channel guidance for current administrative details.

Organizations should decide channel policy according to their tolerance for change and validation capacity. A practical rollout is to pilot a channel or policy change on a small group of devices or an organizational unit, check business-critical applications and extensions, then expand deployment if the pilot succeeds. Keep a process for responding to important security fixes even when using a slower milestone schedule.
