Without a target-site session that is authorized to view the page, the renderer may capture a login or error page instead of the article. A successful screenshot request is not proof that the subscriber-only content was accessible.
Why the screenshot shows a login page
There are two separate authentication boundaries:
- Screenshot-service authentication: Your API key tells the rendering provider that you may call its API.
- Target-site authentication: The website may require its own account, cookies, or other authorized session before it displays subscription content.
One does not automatically provide the other. ScreenshotEngine explicitly explains that its API key authenticates the API call, not the website being captured, and its reviewed endpoint does not document custom cookies, target-site Authorization headers, or login scripts: ScreenshotEngine API keys and authentication. Those details are specific to that endpoint; check the documentation for the exact service and endpoint you use.
The renderer can therefore work correctly while returning an image of a login screen or access-denied page. For example, screenshot-api.net documents that a 401 or 403 may produce a login or error image rather than the requested content: screenshot-api.net error documentation. That is a provider-specific description, not a rule for every screenshot API.
How to diagnose the result
- Check the requested URL. Confirm that the request points to the intended page, not a sign-in URL, redirect, or public preview.
- Check the API request separately. Verify that the screenshot-service API key is present and accepted according to that provider’s documentation. Do not treat it as the subscription-site credential.
- Inspect the image and response details. Look for a login form, access-denied message, redirect, or provider-supplied status and metadata. A rendered error page can mean the browser reached the site but was not authorized to see the requested content.
- Read the endpoint’s authentication documentation. Establish whether it supports an approved authenticated session, such as documented cookies or headers, and how those credentials are handled.
- Confirm permission before capturing. Both the rendering provider’s terms and the target site’s rules must allow the workflow. If support or permission is unclear, ask the provider or site owner, use an authorized source or integration, or capture a page you own or are permitted to capture.
What an authorized workflow requires
For legitimate work—such as capturing your own subscriber account for testing, or working for a customer who has authorized the capture—you need both provider support and permission to access and capture the page. If the API does not document a supported way to provide an authorized session, do not try to imitate a browser login or defeat the site’s access controls. Contact the service provider or site owner about an approved integration instead.

Keep API keys, cookies, and session tokens out of public client-side code and logs. ScreenshotEngine’s documentation advises keeping its API key server-side. Credential handling should be verified against the specific provider’s documentation; never assume an endpoint stores or protects target-site credentials in a particular way.
Why not bypass the subscription checks?
A screenshot renderer does not grant the right to view or reproduce content. The screenshot-api.net Acceptable Use Policy says to point the renderer only at pages you are entitled to capture and prohibits defeating logins, session checks, tokens, paywalls, metered walls, CAPTCHA, bot detection, IP bans, or rate limits. Its policy gives examples such as pages you own or operate, pages captured for a customer who requested it, and public pages where capture and use are lawful and consistent with the site’s terms. The Screenshot API terms also prohibit unauthorized use of access-control mechanisms and automated extraction: Screenshot API terms. A separate screenshot-api.net terms page incorporates its acceptable-use policy and summarizes that users must not use the renderer to get around authentication or bot protection: screenshot-api.net terms. Do not infer that rules for one service automatically apply to another; read the terms that govern your account and use.

Does a screenshot API key log me into the subscription site?
No. It authenticates your call to the screenshot service, not your account on the site being captured.

Can a screenshot API take a subscriber-only page if I have an account?
Only if the provider supports an authorized session workflow and the capture is permitted by the provider and website. Check the exact endpoint and applicable terms.
