First identify what “can’t open Bluetooth” means: the Bluetooth control is missing or greyed out, Bluetooth is off, a device does not appear, pairing fails, or a connection drops. Those symptoms point to different fixes. If Bluetooth is available but one accessory will not connect, check that it is powered, charged, nearby, and in pairing mode, then remove it from the saved-device list and pair it again.
Identify the Bluetooth problem before troubleshooting
Check whether the problem affects Bluetooth itself or just one accessory. If the Bluetooth setting is missing or unavailable, start with the computer or phone. If Bluetooth is on but one device is not found, will not pair, or disconnects, start with that accessory and its saved connection.

Try these checks when one accessory will not connect
Work through the basic checks before changing drivers or resetting system settings. They address common pairing conditions and do not require knowing the exact cause in advance.

- Put it in pairing mode. Follow the accessory maker’s instructions; simply powering it on may not make it discoverable.
- Bring it close to the host. Keep the accessory nearby while pairing and testing the connection.
- Refresh a saved pairing. If the accessory is already listed but will not connect, remove or forget it in Bluetooth settings, then pair it again.
- Restart the connection. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. Power-cycle the accessory as well.
- Restart and update the host. If the problem persists, restart the computer or phone and install available operating-system updates.
Windows: check the control, then troubleshoot pairing
If Bluetooth is available but a device will not connect
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices to check Bluetooth and manage accessories. You can also use Bluetooth in taskbar Quick Settings. If the accessory appears but is disconnected, remove it and add it again. Microsoft also recommends checking pairing mode, range, battery, toggling Bluetooth, updating Windows, and restarting. Windows 11 users can run Microsoft’s automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Microsoft’s broader Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance also covers Windows 10, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. See Microsoft’s guide to fixing Bluetooth problems in Windows.
If the Bluetooth control is missing or greyed out
A missing control is not the same as a pairing failure. First verify that the specific PC model includes Bluetooth; some computers do not. If it does, check whether a physical wireless switch is turned off. Microsoft lists settings, outdated or incompatible drivers, stopped services, hardware faults, and recent updates among possible reasons Bluetooth may disappear. Follow the computer manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model rather than downloading a generic driver from an unfamiliar site. If the computer genuinely has no Bluetooth, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter may add the capability. Check the adapter’s compatibility with the PC and operating system. It will not fix every pairing problem, greyed-out setting, low accessory battery, or driver fault.
iPhone and iPad: distinguish an accessory problem from an unavailable setting
If a Bluetooth accessory will not connect, check its setup, power, and pairing instructions, then follow Apple’s steps for the specific accessory issue in Apple’s iPhone and iPad Bluetooth connection guide. If Bluetooth itself cannot be turned on or its setting is greyed out, Apple advises contacting Apple Support.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
Android: follow the steps for the specific symptom
Android menus and accessory behavior can vary by device, so use Google’s instructions for the symptom you see in Android Help’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide. If an accessory asks for a passcode and you do not know it, Google notes that 0000 and 1234 are common possibilities—not universal codes. Check the accessory’s instructions if neither works.

Escalate if Bluetooth remains missing or unavailable after checking capability and device-specific controls, or if it fails with multiple known-good accessories. For a computer, contact its manufacturer about model-specific drivers, firmware, or hardware. For an iPhone or iPad with a greyed-out Bluetooth setting, contact Apple Support. On Android, use the device maker’s support route if Google’s symptom-specific steps do not resolve the issue.
