If you can’t share a Facebook post, first identify what you’re trying to do: publish a new post, reshare an existing one, send it to a Page, or publish through another app. Then check the setting that applies to that action—usually the post’s audience and privacy settings, Page access and posting identity, or the connected app’s publishing permission. Facebook’s help pages explain these checks, but they can’t determine the cause of a specific error without details about your post and account.
First, identify what “share” means
Facebook uses different controls for different actions. The fix for a missing Share button on an existing post may not be the same as the fix for a post that will not publish to a Page.
- Publish a new post: You’re composing content and choosing who can see it. Facebook’s posting instructions cover this process.
- Reshare an existing post: You’re trying to share content that has already been posted. Check the post’s audience and privacy context; the general help pages do not say that every post can be reshared to every destination.
- Share or post to a Facebook Page: Page access and the identity you’re using become relevant.
- Publish using a connected app or website: The app needs the relevant Facebook publishing permission.
Keep track of the exact action, destination and any message Facebook displays. Those details help distinguish a visibility setting from a Page-access or app-permission issue.
Check the post’s audience and privacy settings
When composing a new post, use Facebook’s audience selector to choose who can see it. For an existing post, inspect the audience shown on that post before changing anything. Audience affects visibility; changing it is not a guaranteed fix for every sharing problem or destination.

Facebook’s privacy controls include settings for posts, Pages, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. Find them under Audience and visibility in Facebook’s privacy settings. The available controls may vary by profile type. See Facebook’s guide to viewing and adjusting privacy settings.
Also consider where the post was published. Meta says that when you post on someone else’s profile, that profile’s owner controls who can view the post. A post’s owner and audience therefore matter when you’re checking its visibility; don’t assume that switching it to Public will solve every failed share.

If you’re trying to share to a Facebook Page
Check that you have access to the destination Page and that you’re using the intended profile or Page identity. Facebook distinguishes between Facebook access and task access; the access available can affect what you can manage. Its Page access instructions explain how to give, edit or remove access and note that you must switch into the Page to manage its access.

If you’re publishing through another app
If you create or publish a post using a third-party app or website, check whether Facebook granted that app the permission it needs. Facebook says an app with permission to share activity may publish to Feed, a timeline, a Page or a group. Available permissions vary by app; if the relevant publishing permission is not offered, that app cannot publish on your behalf.
Review Facebook’s guidance on controlling whether an app can publish posts on your behalf. This check is for app-mediated publishing, not the normal Facebook Share button.

What to do if the settings look right
- Write down the action and destination. Note whether you’re publishing a new post, resharing an existing one, posting to a Page or using an app.
- Record the identity you’re using. For a Page, note whether you’re acting as your profile or the Page.
- Capture the exact behavior. Record whether the Share button is missing, the post fails to publish, or Facebook shows an error—and save the wording of any message.
- Use Facebook’s available help or reporting options. If you believe a privacy setting is not working correctly, consult Facebook’s privacy troubleshooting guidance.
Facebook’s help information does not identify the cause of an individual sharing failure or guarantee a particular support outcome. The Support Inbox and request-another-review process described for reports about other people’s content is not a general fix for a missing Share option or a failed post.
