Venmo payments are usually declined for one of two reasons: the bank or card issuer rejected the transaction, or Venmo’s automated security checks flagged it. The exact error message and payment status determine what to do next, so check those before sending another payment.
Start with the error message and payment status
Open the transaction feed and read any notice associated with the payment. Venmo’s payment-decline guidance says the suggested next step can depend on the specific error. Some errors call for contacting your bank or card issuer; others may point to an app, account, or limit issue.
Check whether the transaction is marked Pending before attempting it again. Pending is not the same as declined: a bank-funded payment may still be processing, and a payment sent to an unverified phone number or email address may wait until the recipient verifies that contact information. Sending a second payment before checking can result in paying twice.
Check the funding source you selected
Venmo lets you select a bank account or card in the payment composer. If you have a sufficient Venmo balance, Venmo says that balance is used first. Check the selected source before sending: Venmo says you cannot change the funding method after a payment has been sent. If the payment was declined, trying a different eligible bank account or card—or a sufficient Venmo balance, if available—may help, but it is not guaranteed to resolve a security or issuer decline.

A card transaction may be rejected because of available funds or a fraud-prevention decision by the issuer or Venmo. If the error indicates that the issuer declined it, contact the bank or card issuer for the account-specific reason.
Make sure your bank account is usable
A bank account can appear connected but still be unavailable for a payment. Check that its routing and account details are correct, that it is verified, and that the account supports ACH transactions. An invalid or disconnected link, failed verification, a bank restriction, or a hold or limit can prevent the payment from going through. Venmo’s guidance on invalid bank accounts, adding a bank account, and payment methods covers these issues.
Know whether the payment is pending or declined
Some bank-funded payments take three to five business days to complete, according to Venmo’s pending-payment guidance. A payment sent to a phone number or email address that is not verified or associated with a Venmo account may also remain pending. If you expected a payment but cannot find it, ask the sender to confirm your Venmo username or the contact details they used.

Venmo says an unclaimed payment to a contact who is not associated with an active account may be taken back. Whether that option is available depends on the payment’s status, so check the transaction details rather than assuming it can be canceled or reversed.
Troubleshoot general app errors
If the message appears to be a technical error rather than a bank or card decline, Venmo suggests these checks in its error-message guidance:
- Confirm that your internet connection is working.
- Check your device’s available storage or memory.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN, then try again.
- Sign out of Venmo and sign back in.
- Update your device’s operating system and check that it meets Venmo’s requirements.
- If the error continues, reinstall the app.
Some error messages can relate to a limit or a technical issue. Follow the instruction shown in the app rather than repeatedly retrying the same payment.

Recover a frozen account after a failed payment
If Venmo tells you your account is frozen because of a failed payment, start recovery in the app by choosing Restore your account, or go to venmo.com/recover. Venmo says a debit card is the fastest recovery funding method. Recovery funded from a bank account may take up to five business days, and the account remains frozen until recovery is complete.

When to contact Venmo
Contact your bank or card issuer when the error says it declined the transaction or when you need the reason a bank-funded payment failed. If the issuer cannot explain the issue, or the error appears to be account- or app-related, contact Venmo through its support options. Include the exact error and transaction status so support can address the problem without you sharing sensitive account credentials in an unsecured message.
