Bose headphones need battery power for active noise cancellation and, depending on the model, Bluetooth, audio processing and other powered features. If the battery dies, some models can still play wired audio passively, but noise cancellation and processing may stop. The exact behavior and battery type depend on the model.
Why Bose headphones need power
Active noise cancellation (ANC) is an electronic process, not just a feature of the earcups. Microphones monitor surrounding sound, and the headphones use powered circuitry to process it and produce noise-cancelling audio. Bose explains that its noise-cancelling headphones require energy, typically from a rechargeable battery, for this technology to function: Bose’s noise-cancellation explainer.
The headphone’s physical fit also blocks some sound, so passive noise reduction remains when the electronics are off. But Bluetooth, onboard controls and sound processing require power on models that use those features.

Sometimes. Bose says current QuietComfort Headphones can play audio from a connected source in passive mode after their battery is depleted. ANC and Active EQ do not work without power, however. This behavior is specific to that model; it should not be assumed for every Bose headphone. Check the owner’s guide for the exact model to see whether wired playback is supported and what functions remain available.

How long does a Bose headphone battery last?
Bose’s published runtimes are model-specific maximums, not promises for every listening session. Settings and use affect playback time, and the figures below are not results from a controlled comparison across models.
| Model | Battery and stated runtime | Charging information |
|---|---|---|
| Current QuietComfort Headphones | Built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery; up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on. | Up to two hours for a full charge; a 15-minute charge provides up to four hours of playback under Bose’s stated conditions. |
| QuietComfort Ultra Headphones | Up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off, or up to 18 hours with it on. | A 15-minute charge provides up to 2.5 hours with Immersive Audio off, or up to two hours with it on. |
| Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 | Up to 20 hours of full-featured audio playback. | Not stated in the cited Bose product information. |
These figures come from Bose’s model-specific product and support information: QuietComfort Headphones, QuietComfort Ultra Headphones and Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. For your own headphones, use the manual or support page for that model rather than extrapolating from another generation.

What battery does a Bose QuietComfort model use?
Bose battery formats have varied by generation. The model name and number matter: “QuietComfort” alone is not enough to identify a replacement.

Bose gives an average runtime of 40 hours, with runtime varying by battery type and use. QuietComfort 2 owner’s guide.
- Legacy QuietComfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling: A separate Bose guide specifies two AAA alkaline cells and an average of 80 hours in the application described. It says rechargeable batteries average about half the alkaline runtime. Owner’s guide.
- QuietComfort 3: Its guide describes a dedicated rechargeable battery pack, with approximately 25 hours of use from a full charge and about two hours for an initial charge. QuietComfort 3 owner’s guide.
- Current QuietComfort Headphones: Bose lists a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery; the battery is not a user-swappable set of AAA cells. See the model specifications.
The runtime examples above come from different generations and source conditions, so they are not directly comparable tests. The cited guides also do not establish a market-wide breakdown of battery types or an average lifespan across Bose models.

How to charge or replace the battery safely
Charging current QuietComfort Headphones
Bose specifies USB-C for current QuietComfort Headphones. Use the supplied USB-C cable with a computer, laptop or wall charger, and allow up to two hours for a full charge. These instructions and charge-time claims apply to this model, not necessarily to older Bose headphones. Confirm the charging port and requirements in the guide for your exact model before choosing a cable. Bose charging and product information.
Replacing a battery in an older model
Follow the model’s owner’s guide for battery format and replacement. Do not substitute a generic battery or pack based only on the QuietComfort name: the cited models use different arrangements, and a dedicated rechargeable pack must match the headphone. For repair or replacement help, Bose directs owners to its support channels; if the product is under warranty, contact Bose before attempting a repair. Bose repair guidance.
