More tankers moving through or around the Strait of Hormuz does not mean fuel supply has recovered or that borrowing costs must fall. A report published by the Wall Street Journal on October 2, 2026, and republished by Hindustan Times, described a partial, uneven recovery: regional crude exports were estimated near prewar levels, but exports of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel were still substantially lower. At the same time, freight costs, security risks and broader forces such as government borrowing and resilient economic demand were keeping pressure on prices and bond yields.

What the market figures showed on October 2

The October 2 report captured a sharp rise in energy prices alongside elevated U.S. borrowing costs. These are dated snapshots from that report, not current live quotes or independently verified measurements:

  • The global crude-futures benchmark rose 4.4% on Thursday to $102.31 a barrel, according to the Wall Street Journal.
  • AAA’s U.S. average gasoline price was above $4.41 a gallon, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
  • The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached its highest level in 24 years during the week, then eased to 5.233% on Thursday. The report described the yield’s rise over the quarter as its steepest since 1994.
  • U.S. mortgage rates had moved above 7%, according to the report.

The pattern is not evidence that tanker traffic has no effect on prices. It shows why traffic alone is an incomplete measure of how much fuel is reaching buyers, at what cost, and what investors expect inflation and borrowing to look like.

Why returning crude tankers have not restored fuel supply

Crude oil is not the same thing as the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel used by households, businesses and airlines. Refineries must process crude into those products, and disruptions or tight inventories can constrain the amount available even when crude exports recover.

Measure reported October 2 Reported level versus prewar What it indicates
Middle East crude exports, estimated by Morgan Stanley analysts as reported by the Wall Street Journal About 7% below prewar levels A substantial crude-export recovery, but not proof that tanker flows or deliveries are fully restored.
Regional exports of refined products, estimated by J.P. Morgan as reported by the Wall Street Journal Around 40% below prewar levels Fuel products remained much more constrained than crude exports.

J.P. Morgan characterized the rebound as uneven. The gap matters because central banks and fuel buyers care not only about crude but also about the refined products that directly affect transport and production costs. UBS Investment Bank’s global head of economics and strategy, Arend Kapteyn, said the products were “super tight.”

Visible vessel traffic is not a complete flow measure

Some vessels have switched off tracking transponders, and some cargoes move through ship-to-ship transfers. As a result, observed traffic can miss movements and estimates of total flows are uncertain. Rebecca Babin, a senior energy trader at CIBC Private Wealth, cautioned that the flow data “could be a little optimistic, but it’s also not necessarily going to be consistent,” adding, “It’s really opaque.”

Nor did the security risk disappear with a pickup in traffic: the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported that three vessels in the Strait were hit by projectiles on the Wednesday before the October 2 report. Threats, rerouting and limited tanker capacity can make shipping less reliable and more expensive even when more crude is moving.

Why delivered oil and diesel can stay expensive

The price of a crude-futures contract is not the same as the cost of a physical cargo delivered to a refinery, and neither directly tells you the price of finished fuel. Freight, route length, insurance and supply-demand conditions can widen the gaps between those prices.

Price or cost measure Figure reported October 2 Why it matters
Global crude-futures benchmark $102.31 a barrel after a 4.4% Thursday rise, according to the Wall Street Journal A benchmark futures price, not a delivered physical cargo price.
North Sea dated crude $127.42 a barrel on Thursday, according to Argus Media as reported by the Wall Street Journal A physical crude price that can differ sharply from the headline futures benchmark.
Middle East-to-China supertanker voyage The equivalent of $35 a barrel for a roughly 21-day voyage, up from less than $7 the day before the war began, according to Argus Media as reported by the Wall Street Journal A freight-cost illustration of how much more expensive it can be to move crude, not an oil price.
New York diesel futures relative to crude Diesel had recently fetched roughly double the price of crude; the report gave no exact spread value. A sign of severe pressure in refined-fuel markets, rather than a precise, general-purpose diesel premium.

Refinery disruptions, depleted inventories and the possibility of export restrictions can add to product-market tightness. Energy buyers are also weighing uncertainty about how long the dislocation will last. Charlie Macnamara, head of U.S. Bank’s commodities team, described the dilemma: “Do I lock in now? Or do I wait and hope that things get better?”

A Dallas Fed survey in 2026, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 2, found that 48% of surveyed energy executives expected diesel-crude spreads to take at least a year to return to 2025 levels; roughly 36% expected the same for gasoline. Those are respondents’ expectations, not a guarantee of how long prices will remain elevated.

Why bond yields can rise even if oil flows improve

Higher fuel costs can lift inflation concerns, which may make investors less willing to hold long-term bonds at lower yields. But yields also respond to expected government borrowing, the supply of bonds for investors to absorb, economic growth and investment demand. The October 2 report pointed to large fiscal deficits, heavy issuance of debt linked to AI investment, and an economy it described as resilient alongside the energy shock.

That mix means a recovery in oil exports may ease one source of inflation pressure without resolving the other forces that can keep yields high. The report’s account identifies several plausible contributors; it does not establish that Hormuz or any single factor caused a particular move in Treasury yields. Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, said, “If economic resilience and investment demand remain intact, there may still be scope for yields to move higher.”

What a higher 10-year Treasury yield means for mortgage rates

The 10-year Treasury yield is a benchmark that influences longer-term borrowing costs, including mortgage rates, but it does not set them one-for-one. Mortgage pricing also reflects lender funding and operating costs, borrower and prepayment risk, and the spread investors demand for mortgage-backed securities. The report’s observation that U.S. mortgage rates had moved above 7% illustrates that households were facing higher financing costs at that time; it does not provide an individual rate quote or predict where rates will go next.

For households, businesses and investors, the practical distinction is between a short-term improvement in shipping flows and a durable normalization of fuel supply and financing conditions. The October 2 figures documented an apparent crude-export rebound, not a complete return to prewar conditions across refined fuels, freight markets or bond markets.
