If Bluetooth headphones sound muffled as soon as you join a call, the headset microphone may be triggering a different Bluetooth audio mode. On Windows, the switch can move playback from high-quality stereo to a two-way mode that supports the microphone but plays audio in mono. On a Mac, Apple says sound quality and volume can drop while an app uses the headphones’ built-in microphone. The right fix depends on whether you need to keep using that microphone and whether your computer and headphones support newer Bluetooth audio features.
Why Bluetooth headphones sound worse during calls
Bluetooth Classic uses different profiles for playback and calls. Microsoft describes A2DP as high-quality stereo playback that does not capture sound from the headset microphone. The Hands-Free Profile (HFP) supports both microphone capture and playback, but its playback is monaural. Windows can select HFP when an app opens the headset’s microphone, and audio sent to the headset may be resampled for that profile. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Classic audio documentation explains the distinction.
That trade-off can make music, game audio, or other computer sound seem less spacious or muffled while the call is active. It does not necessarily mean the headphones have developed a fault: the change may be a consequence of using their microphone and speakers at the same time.

Compare ordinary playback with playback while a call app is using the headphones’ microphone. If quality drops as soon as the app accesses that microphone and returns when microphone use ends, the profile change is a likely explanation on a Windows Bluetooth Classic setup. If the sound is poor even when no app is using the microphone, check the output device, connection, and platform-specific audio settings instead.

Fix the problem on a Mac
Apple says audio quality and volume can fall when an app uses the Bluetooth headphones’ built-in microphone; static or popping can also occur. The reduction lasts while the microphone is in use. Try these steps in order:
- Close video-call, conferencing, or chat apps that may be using the headphones’ microphone.
- Make sure System Settings—or System Preferences on older macOS versions—is not open with Sound settings displayed.
- If sound quality remains reduced, select the Mac’s internal speakers in Control Centre > Sound, then select the Bluetooth headphones again.

Windows with Bluetooth Classic: keep stereo playback by trying another microphone
If you need better headphone playback during calls, try setting the call app to use a different microphone—such as the computer’s built-in microphone—while keeping the Bluetooth headphones selected for output. This is a practical workaround inferred from the A2DP and HFP roles, not a guaranteed fix: available controls and app behavior vary. If the app does not let you choose input and output separately, check its audio-device settings or Windows sound settings for those choices.
Using a different microphone may let the headphones remain on a playback-focused path, but it also means the headset’s microphone is not carrying your voice. Consider microphone placement and the call environment when choosing this approach.

Check Windows 11 LE Audio stereo support
Some Windows 11 PCs can improve playback while the Bluetooth microphone is active, and some support stereo in that situation. Microsoft’s documented stereo option requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, a PC with factory-integrated Bluetooth LE support, suitable manufacturer drivers, and a Bluetooth peripheral that supports LE Audio. Microsoft specifies build 26100.4484 or newer for the updates described on its support page; LE Audio branding on headphones alone does not establish that the complete setup qualifies.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Open the output settings for the Bluetooth LE Audio device.
- Look for Format when microphone is active. If available, select mono or stereo.
If the setting is missing, Microsoft says the system does not support stereo while the microphone is active. If stereo causes audio loss or glitches, Microsoft recommends switching to mono for compatibility. See Microsoft’s instructions for using a Bluetooth audio device with Windows.

If audio is poor outside calls
The call-profile trade-off does not explain every Bluetooth audio problem. For persistent low-quality sound, no sound, or connection trouble, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking that the intended output is selected, reviewing the audio format, removing and pairing the device again, toggling Bluetooth, installing current Bluetooth drivers and Windows updates, and confirming A2DP support. These checks may address other causes; they do not remove the Bluetooth Classic trade-off when the headset microphone is active.
