If a YouTube music radio stream starts in sync but the audio/video mismatch grows over time, suspect a timing problem—such as inconsistent audio-device sample rates, buffering, device timestamps, or high system load—not simply a fixed delay. First determine whether the mismatch is already present in a local recording or appears only in YouTube playback; that tells you which part of the signal path to investigate.

First distinguish drift from delay

Audio that is late by roughly the same amount throughout a recording has a fixed offset. Audio that falls progressively further behind or ahead has accumulating drift. Those problems call for different checks: a fixed offset may respond to a sync adjustment, while accumulating drift points toward timing behavior that a static delay will not correct.

Also distinguish both from stream latency. Latency is the time between capture and playback; it can make a stream reach viewers late without changing the timing relationship between its audio and video. YouTube says the player’s read-ahead buffer is a main source of stream latency, and reducing that buffer can make viewers more vulnerable to buffering (YouTube: Understand live streaming latency).

Find where the mismatch begins

  1. Record at two points. Save a short local recording near the start of the stream, then another after the mismatch becomes noticeable. Compare the same identifiable events in each—for example, a vocal onset and a visible scene change. This is a diagnostic procedure, not a guarantee that every setup records the identical signal path used for streaming.
  2. Classify the symptom. Note whether the offset is fixed, steadily increasing, intermittent, or reported only by some viewers. OBS community guidance distinguishes a constant offset from drift that accumulates over time; treat that distinction as a diagnostic clue rather than an official universal rule (OBS community discussion).
  3. Compare local and YouTube playback. If the local recording is already out of sync, focus first on the sources and encoder path. If it is clean but YouTube playback is not, inspect the ingest health messages and compare playback conditions before changing encoder settings.

Check audio clocks, sample rates, and buffers

Make active device sample rates consistent

In OBS, check the configured sample rate and the operating-system sample rate for every active audio device, including any microphone, interface, desktop-audio device, or other physical input. Use a consistent supported rate as a diagnostic baseline. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recognizes 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates, and its health documentation can flag sample-rate problems (YouTube Live API: liveStreams; YouTube: Live streaming error messages).

OBS’s analyzer warns that a device running at a different sample rate from other devices can result in drift over time or distortion. Matching rates is a useful check, not proof that every clock or source-timing problem is solved (OBS Log Analyzer).

Review buffering, timestamps, and system load

Read the OBS log and analyzer output for audio-buffering warnings, incorrect device timestamps, or signs of high system load. OBS notes that maximum audio buffering can be associated with very high load, affect stream latency, or cause individual sources to stop working; incorrect device timestamps can also sometimes trigger the warning. Treat these as clues to investigate in your own log, not as a diagnosis based on the analyzer’s example report.

OBS’s backend passes video with timestamps and handles audio through buffers, with resampling or remixing when source rates or channel counts differ. In a long-running setup, inspect the full path from each audio source through OBS to the stream; the existence of these mechanisms does not mean OBS necessarily causes drift or that resampling alone will fix a source-clock problem (OBS Studio Backend Design).

Use OBS and YouTube health reports to separate local and delivery issues

Inspect OBS statistics and logs

Check OBS stream statistics for dropped frames and the log or analyzer for audio and timestamp warnings. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of connection instability or insufficient bitrate capacity to the ingest server. It also cautions that viewers may experience buffering even when OBS reports no dropped frames (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting). A connection issue can affect delivery, but dropped frames alone do not establish that audio is drifting relative to video.

Check YouTube Live Control Room

Review the stream health indicator and its error messages. YouTube’s guidance covers ingest problems such as unsupported formats, incorrect audio settings, sample-rate issues, keyframe problems, and video starvation. Errors include timestamps and remain visible while unresolved, which can help correlate a warning with the time the mismatch began (YouTube: Live streaming error messages).

Adjust settings only after identifying the likely fault

  • For a stable, fixed offset: an audio sync-offset adjustment may be appropriate. Recheck both the local recording and stream playback after the change.
  • For growing drift: investigate device sample rates, source clocks, timestamps, buffering, and system load first. Repeatedly increasing an offset chases a moving error rather than correcting its cause.
  • For a clean local recording but problematic YouTube playback: use the health messages to check ingest configuration and delivery. YouTube’s ordinary live-ingest guidance recommends H.264 video and AAC audio and identifies audio configuration and keyframe issues among possible errors; follow the current message for your selected ingest mode rather than applying a setting from a different mode.
  • For buffering or late playback without worsening audio/video alignment: consider latency and network conditions separately. YouTube explains that lower-latency playback uses less read-ahead buffer and may be more susceptible to viewer buffering.

Change one relevant variable at a time, then make fresh recordings and compare the same events. That makes it easier to tell whether a change addressed the cause or merely shifted the apparent offset.

When HLS or latency settings are involved

YouTube says HLS delivers video in segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. HLS segment-duration settings affect delivery latency; they are not a remedy for mismatched clocks or device timestamps. The HLS documentation permits additional codecs and has settings distinct from ordinary ingest, so use the instructions for the selected protocol rather than mixing recommendations (YouTube: Set up an HLS stream).

A viewer saying “the audio is delayed” does not by itself establish drift. Ask whether the audio/video mismatch grows within a single playback, whether it is present in a local recording, and whether it affects all viewers or only some. Those answers help separate synchronization from player buffering and delivery delay.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you observe What to check next
The same offset is present from the beginning and stays about the same Compare the local recording; consider a fixed sync adjustment if the offset is confirmed.
The mismatch grows as the stream runs Check sample-rate consistency, device timestamps, OBS buffering warnings, and system load.
The local recording is in sync, but YouTube playback is not Inspect YouTube stream health and OBS connection statistics; distinguish ingest or delivery problems from source timing.
Some viewers report a delay or buffering, but the audio/video relationship does not worsen Investigate player latency and network conditions separately from synchronization.
An OBS log shows dropped frames Investigate connection stability and bitrate capacity; dropped frames do not by themselves prove audio drift.
An OBS analyzer flags sample-rate mismatch or maximum audio buffering Verify rates for every active device and inspect timestamps and load; analyzer warnings are diagnostic prompts, not proof of a single cause.
