There are many computing specialties because the field covers distinct problems: understanding computation, designing hardware, building software, operating technology, applying systems inside organizations, securing systems, and analyzing data. Degree titles point toward different emphases, but they are not standardized syllabi. To choose between programs, compare the required courses and outcomes in the specific school’s current catalog.
Why are there so many computing specialties?
Computing is both a field of foundational ideas and a collection of applied practices. Studying algorithms or the foundations of artificial intelligence involves different questions from designing a processor-based device, maintaining an organization’s network, or fitting a data system to a business process.
Software work also varies in scale and demands. A small program and a complex system used by many people may both involve coding, but the latter can require formal requirements, security, verification, testing, and long-term lifecycle management. Specialties give programs room to build depth around these different problems while sharing a computing foundation. Their boundaries overlap: security, programming, systems, and data can appear in several curricula. The ACM CCECC’s discipline descriptions and ABET’s curricular criteria illustrate these different emphases without making them mutually exclusive (ACM CCECC; ABET computing criteria; ABET engineering criteria).
What does each computing degree emphasize?
These are broad curricular profiles, not universal definitions of every program with a particular title. A school’s course requirements and program outcomes are more informative than the name alone.

How do the most commonly confused degrees differ?
Computer science and information technology
CS centers on computation: its foundations, algorithms, and programming approaches. IT centers on putting technology to work and keeping it useful—implementing, configuring, planning, and maintaining solutions and infrastructure. Both may include programming, networks, operating systems, or security, but their required depth and context can differ.
Information systems and information technology
IS emphasizes how an organization uses technology and data to carry out its processes and meet its goals. IT emphasizes the technology solutions and infrastructure themselves, including their implementation and operation. In practice, the two can intersect in areas such as databases, systems analysis, and project work.

Computer engineering and computer science
Computer engineering focuses on designing hardware-and-software systems, including processor-based devices and communications. CS is broader around computational foundations and methods. Engineering criteria call for mathematics, science, and engineering topics suited to complex hardware/software systems; engineering and computing accreditation criteria are distinct and should not be treated as interchangeable (ABET engineering criteria).
Software engineering and computer science
Software engineering concentrates on the practices needed to specify, design, build, test, secure, verify, validate, and maintain complex software. CS provides a wider grounding in computing concepts and techniques. A CS program can include substantial software development, and an SE program still relies on computing foundations; compare the actual required sequences rather than assuming the labels define a sharp divide.

How to compare actual degree programs
Use the current catalog and program plan for each school. ABET criteria describe topic coverage rather than prescribing a fixed list of courses, so programs can implement similar aims differently (ABET computing criteria).
- Map required courses. Check how much of the curriculum is required versus elective in algorithms and theory, programming, databases, networking, operating systems, hardware or electronics, security, statistics, and organizational or management subjects. For example, ABET’s IT criteria include information management, networking, software development and management, systems, user experience, and web/mobile systems. Its IS criteria include application development, programming, data management, IT infrastructure, systems analysis and design, project management, and organizational context.
- Check math and science. Compare discrete mathematics, calculus, probability and statistics, physics, and other science requirements. Engineering programs may require substantial engineering science and mathematics; do not infer that a computing program has the same requirements from a similar-sounding title.
- Look at applied work. Compare labs, internships, capstones, software projects, system administration work, and hardware design. Relevant ABET computing criteria include experiential learning or project expectations, but schools implement them differently.
- Verify accreditation for the exact program. If accreditation matters to your plans, identify the program, degree level, and applicable ABET commission. ABET lists computing accreditation separately from engineering accreditation and the commissions cover degree levels differently. Check the program’s current status directly rather than inferring it from a department or degree title. The computing criteria page retrieved for the 2026–2027 cycle and the engineering criteria page retrieved for 2025–2026 refer to different editions; verify the edition that applies to the program (ABET accreditation criteria).
- Plan transfers course by course. If you begin at an associate program, ask for a written transfer plan and confirm how each course applies with the receiving institution. ACM CCECC recommends compatible transfer planning and completing coherent course sequences at well-defined points, but that guidance does not guarantee another school will accept particular credits (ACM CCECC).
- Match coursework to the work you want to try. Look for opportunities in software construction, infrastructure, organizational systems, hardware, security, or data analysis. These are useful starting points, not career silos: ACM notes that security content is relevant across computing paths.
Can a degree title tell you which program is better?
No universal ranking follows from these curricular distinctions. The cited ACM and ABET materials describe disciplines and program criteria; they do not establish comparable salary, employment, or hiring outcomes by major. Those outcomes require separate evidence specific to geography, degree level, and the job or industry being compared.

Degree names are also not globally uniform. The descriptions here reflect mainly US-oriented professional and accreditation guidance, and individual institutions may use the same title for different course mixes. The CS2023 report landing page says the report was endorsed by ACM on Jan. 18, 2024, IEEE-CS on Jan. 22, 2024, and AAAI on Feb. 22, 2024 (CS2023 report).
